The boys and I have been busy. The weather has been outstanding. Ideal conditions for playing. Thanks to Lycoming College and our friends for their support. We are trending. The Warriors golf year-round. 8 events in the fall and 7 in the spring. Our schedule is full. There is never a dull moment with my guys. Major props to Williamsport Country Club. They are super nice. WCC serves as our home course. We hone our skills. Lycoming is blessed to have an amazing facility in the backyard. Our shirts are always tucked. We wear belts. My man David Coates and his staff take great care of us.
This is my 21st year coaching the squad. Yes. I have been mentoring the Lycoming College Golf Team for quite some time. This is my second stint after a brief pause. I was with the Warriors from 2001 to 2016. I stepped away to find meaning. I am still searching. But retiring from hoops left me with a major void. Broadcasting helps. I needed more. Interacting with youngsters is still important. The opportunity came knocking again. I am glad to be back.
Coaching Division III golf is the best gig in the world. There are so many perks with very few distractions. No drama with these boys. We have expectations, but it is different. Our players have no NIL deals. Yet. They come in all shapes and sizes. My guys always graduate. Our parents and grands are outstanding. They come to many events. We have a large following. They don’t blame me when a ball flies into the trees. No experts behind the scenes. You should play zone, Coach. That never happens in this sport.
I love all of my guys on the roster. Everyone is so different. Our van rides and overnights are hysterical. 2026 is off to a great start. We continue to turn heads. Would I like my boys to make more putts? Sure. But they are all fantastic kids. I enjoy the camaraderie. Our interactions are stupendous. We are constantly laughing. Each trip is better than the last. I am serious. I still enjoy the game, but play very little. No worries. Golf takes time. I would rather fish. I am a has-been. But now that I am around the boys, I am starting to get that itch. I played 9 the other day. Say what? I even carried my bag. The guys made fun of me. My legs still hurt.
Our fall season kicked off a few weeks back. The boys and I were in Carlisle, PA, for the Dickinson Fall Invitational. 26 teams. Some of the finest D3 squads in the Mid-Atlantic Region. The Warriors made history and posted some outstanding scores. Senior Connor Shanahan led the way. The scrappy left-hander carded a 74 and a 73. Unheard of. Connor set the two-day Lycoming mark. Sophomore Tre Lesperance also played solid. Our little guy fired 74 and 75 over the weekend. Senior Will Eberz posted two 77s. Sophomore Colby Seiler went 79-77. Lycoming tallied 304 on Saturday. We set a new school record on Sunday with a blistering 302. Incredible. But. Division III is loaded. The Warriors finished T16. Our best finish in a large tournament. Gettysburg won the team title with -8 for the weekend. My man Connor was 3 over. He finished tied for 32nd. Dude? This is crazy.
