North Central PA is home to many treasures. We are super spoiled. This past weekend, Jensen and I had some time to wander. I took him to a place where I’d fish when I was his age. It has been several years, but it was well worth the trek. My son and I shared another fantastic experience.

Rock Run is located in the McIntrye Wild Area of Loyalsock State Forest. She is one of the most beautiful streams in all of Pennsylvania. Her waters are crystal clear and pass through incredible natural gorges, falls, and rock formations. The scenery is splendid. Eventually, Rock Run meets up with Lycoming Creek near Ralston.

We fished and camped at Rock Run back in high school. My chums and I had many great excursions. Getting there is simple. But navigating the stream is rather tricky. I will get to that a little later. The last four miles of Rock Run Road provides access to the waterway. There are several spots worth exploring. Rock Run has three major waterfalls. None of them are super large, but they are worth a look. The beauty of this stream is amazing.

The Upper Rock Run Falls is the tallest. It is easy to find from the roadway. A marked path takes you to the top of the 10-foot falls. Please be careful. The rocks and path are super slippery. The water travels through a rock flume and pours into a deep pool. It is a very scenic spot.

Middle Rock Falls is the most popular. It only measures 8 feet, but it is my favorite. The rocks and shale around the falls are stunning. You have great access to stand at the very top or bottom for a few photos. I never recommend standing near the edge. Use caution, or you will fall in. The short hike to Middle Rock Falls is also well marked.

Lower Rock Run Falls is the most difficult to find. Her path leads you a tad upstream. The waterfall is a few klicks down. The trail is worn, and the cliffs make it hard to see. This is where Jensen and I started. We wanted to fish the 2-mile stretch to Middle Rock Falls. The recent rains had the stream flowing. It was perfect conditions. The kid and I are tired of catching Smallmouth. We were hoping to land a few wild Browns — perhaps a few native Brooks. Jensen had his ultralight spinning gear. I had my fly rod.

It was a gorgeous day. We headed upstream, and no one was around. We had the entire stretch of water to ourselves. Jensen was on fire. He landed several beautiful fish. Many small Rainbows that were all dolled up. The colors were amazing. Healthy and aggressive. The same with the wild Browns. This was fantastic. We fished for two hours. No cell service. We finally made it to Middle Rock Falls and walked back to the car. Teach was mad.

Jensen stopped counting. But I am thinking he landed and released at least 20. I got a few into the net. Jensen captured some great footage. He made a sweet fishing video. We will be back. Sooner than later. I enjoy these special times. Rock Run is a beauty. Check it out. Cheers.
