With the concept of wearing the clothes you already have, but in new ways, I wanted to explore different styles of jeans and how to refresh old denim.
Jeans are a ubiquitous part of most of our lives and an essential fabric for fall, so let’s run down some styling options to breathe some crisp autumn air into your jeans.
First up, white jeans with open-toe kitten heels. The whole “no white after Labor Day” rule hasn’t really been relevant in this century, so you can still wear white jeans well into October. We all know September can still be on the warm side, so keep up your pedicures and wear your wide-legged white jeans with a dainty strapped heel like LifeStride’s Navin Sandal from DSW. Or for a bit more support, look for a slingback option like Sam Edelman’s Cressa Slingback Kitten Heel Sandal from Nordstrom Rack. Either pair elevates a white or cream pair of jeans and can be worn with a silky camisole and shawl on a breezy early fall night or with a button-down and suede jacket. In need of a white jean? Check out Old Navy’s High-Waisted Taylor Trouser Wide-Leg pants in ecru.
From light to dark, black jeans can serve as a replacement for just about any black pant occasion in the coming months. Go for a straight, ankle-skimming pair and a pointed patent heel for the evening or a suede or leather pump to keep things soft during the day. You can play it safe with a neutral color or bring a bit of contrast to the darker denim with a bold heel like Nine West’s Folowe d’Orsay Pointy Toe Pumps in light blue patent or baby pink. Wear a bib-collar blouse and a fitted cardigan. Or if there is still some summery sunshine out, try this jean and shoe combo with a gingham fitted top.
Next up are the trending granny jeans, which are essentially the older relative of the classic mom jean. And if you are a woman of a certain age, chances are you definitely have a pair. Usually high-waisted, straight through the leg, and slightly relaxed without being oversized, this style favors clean, traditional details over rips and embellishment or dramatic shapes. So, unearth the granny jeans, roll up the cuffs, and pair them with bright socks and loafers below and a high-necked blouse and blazer up top. If you haven’t yet reached the age of granny jeans, check out Quince’s Bella Stretch Relaxed Straight Jeans to fill that void.
For any high-waisted wide-leg jeans this season, wear them with a tucked-in blouse, slim belt, or fitted T-shirt to keep the waist visible for lady-like vibes up top. Go for a skater-style sneaker like Vans’ Old Skool Shoe with a slightly chunkier sole than the classic Converse sneakers for your feet. This creates contrast, plus it is way more comfortable than heels for running around.
For boots, I know it seems obvious, but you really can’t go wrong with boot-cut jeans, and chances are most folks have at least one pair in their dresser. To experiment with this style, go for a pointy-toed boot like Aldo’s Joanna Bootie in either black or, better yet, snake print to give your look some edge. Keep the edge going with a graphic band tee and oversized cardigan. Or have the boots be a cowboy pointy-toed pair and tuck in a plaid button-up. If you’re feeling daring, top it off with a contrasting hued denim jacket for some Canadian Cowboy flair.
Lastly, barrel jeans. This silhouette features a high waist and a curved, tapered leg to create a balanced proportion and goes great with a sneaker. I recommend a neutral sneaker for this style, like Adidas’ Barreda Lo Sneaker in white/taupe from DSW. The proportion here is key with barrel jeans when worn with a turtleneck or button-down, so a neutral shoe gives it a quiet type of elegance versus a boot, and again way more comfy than heels.
Denim is easily the most wearable item in your wardrobe and can be paired with a variety of shoe styles, tops, and jackets this fall to elevate your standard T-shirt with jean wearer into a chic autumn-lover.
