Logan McGinn and I are buds. The now 14-year-old phenom is an absolute stud. Super polite and sweet. The kid can do it all. Please don’t let his age and size fool you. Logan McGinn is a superstar. I ran into Logan at the WCC Member Guest. He went out of his way to give me some knuckles.
McGinn started turning heads when he was just a youngster. His junior golf resume is quite impressive. One of the finest in the area. Logan has several titles and tournament crowns. Hundreds of accomplishments and even more accolades. He has competed at the highest level. McGinn has represented South Side and Williamsport on the global stage. Incredible.
I vividly remember my first column on Logan. He was heading to the Masters. McGinn qualified for the drive, pitch, and putt national finals. Yes. Augusta. Logan then made the Webb’s front cover. My man played in the Press Thorton Junior Masters. It’s a big deal. I wrote another article last summer. McGinn and I ran into each other at Williamsport Country Club. We only played two holes together. I made a few lucky putts, and I said no to a rematch.
Logan continues to shine. He is getting stronger. His short game is unrivaled. Legit. McGinn still competes in the junior circuits. But he has recently teed it up against the grownups. Logan is holding his own and then some. He has been in the mix in several big-time tournaments. Again. The best in our state and region. The finest from college, local scratch golfers, and several former tour pros. Incredible.
Earlier this week. My young friend made history. Logan McGinn became the youngest player to ever qualify for the PA State Amateur Championship. Dude? McGinn fired a 71 to tie for the medalist honors. He had 4 birdies, 11 pars, and only 3 bogeys. Logan and 11 others punched their tickets to play at historic Oakmont Country Club later this summer. Logan tied for the best score out of 120 elite players. Not kids. Grownups. Old timers. Super polished and already proven golfers.
“I really didn’t know about the record until moments after,” Logan explained. “I was just happy to advance. Earn a spot in the Championship. Then they told me I was the youngest to ever qualify. That was pretty cool.”
South Side’s Conley Killian was on the bag, too. Dude? Yes. Logan’s best friend, a 13-year-old neighborhood buddy, was carrying his clubs. A caddy. THE DUD FLIES PLANES. What a script. This is incredible. I am calling Hulu.
“I loved having Conley with me,” Logan added. “We got a lot of strange looks. But it means a lot to have so much support. I can’t wait to get to Oakmont. I get a chance to compete against the very best amateurs in Pennsylvania. I am looking forward to it.”
Bravo, my man. You continue to make me smile. I knew it would happen. But I can’t believe how well you are playing against the big boys. At 14? This is unheard of. Congratulations Logan. Continue to stay humble, and don’t forget about me at Lycoming.
Best wishes at the State Amateur. This is just the beginning. Cheers.
