Spring Outfit Ideas

We’re in the midst of spring, and it’s been fairly nice out, but still chilly and somewhat fickle weather-wise. Those types of days (colder mornings, hotter afternoons) and days that call for you to wear many hats (figuratively speaking) can be challenging to dress in a way that’s appropriate, comfortable, and stylish. Fortunately, you can take the decision fatigue out of picking an outfit with some go-to outfit formulas. These can be formulas you’ve used over the winter, but spring-afied, or brand-new, fresh combinations for the season that will see you into summer.

First up, what have you been wearing on repeat this past winter? Or what’s one of your most loved garments? A favorite sweater, dress, or accessory? A preferred type of sweater, dress, or pant cut? Can you incorporate those pieces into a warmer-weather version, or does a warmer-weather version exist? I love a good jumpsuit, and when wondering what to wear, I look to that as my first option. Spring is a great time for a chambray or denim jumpsuit for a utilitarian style take. I have one from Banana Republic from several years ago that can be worn on its own or with layers. They currently have a Demin Utility Jumpsuit on sale as of this writing that features an electric waistband and zipper closure with snaps. Wear it against type, layered over a button-down and loafers, if you’re able to get away with that kind of creative dressing at work. Or wear it functionally, more like coveralls for getting the garden up and running.

Another great jumpsuit for spring is anything soft, floral, and floaty. Think more of a romper type style versus a denim overall as suggested above. This could be a jersey-type jumpsuit for lounging around the house, or something with some slight structure for a night out, like Gap Factory’s Sleeveless Wide-Leg Jumpsuit in navy or olive floral. This is a flattering piece with sizes from XS to XXL. I’d wear flip flops and a sun hat for cocktails on the deck just as easily as with flats and a cardigan for church.

Now, having taken up two paragraphs to promote jumpsuits, like it’s perfectly normal to be obsessed, another outfitting formula to consider is less garment specific and more so color and pattern pairing. I’ve seen looks of black and white polka dots with one red accessory on various Pinterest boards I follow, and I’m hoping to recreate them in real life for myself. You can interpret this pairing in a number of ways. Polka dot blouse, black pants, red shoes. Polka dot dress, jean jacket, red purse. You can switch up black and white with navy and white, or switch polka dots with stripes. I’m leaning more toward purses and shoes, but you could have jewelry, a head scarf, a kerchief, or a bright red lip or nails. Look at what you have and limit the red accessory to just one piece.

Speaking of red, all of the trend articles I’ve seen and must-have lists purport that bright cherry red is still trending. A hot red top is one way to delve into this color if you haven’t before. Both Uniqlo and Quince have red linen tanks that will work with trousers now, and shorts come summer. And if you’re into matching sets, you can pick up both pants and shorts in the same tone from Quince.

Matching sets come in handy at any time of year, but for a spring outfit combo, you have a bit more variety than in colder or the hottest months. Right now, there are so many vacation-coded sets in stores, but there are also professional-minded sets. Bloomingdale’s has a variety of vest-top matching sets. Their Luvee Sleeveless Vest & Pleated Dress Pants come in a dark mocha shade rendered in a relaxed, but still polished silhouette. You can wear something like this to work just as easily as to a springtime wedding.

Another fun take on sets is wearing an all-denim look. Your favorite roomy jeans and a chambray shirt, or a jacket and jeans in the same wash with a t-shirt. Go sleek with an animal-print heel or sporty with chunky sneakers. You can mix and match wash shades if you’re looking to add more visual contrast. This can see you into summer by swapping jeans for jorts or a skirt.

Speaking of contrast, you can build an outfit by pairing disparate-seeming pieces together. Right now, adding a sporty element to a formal or professional look is on trend. Windbreakers are a practical garment for rainy days. Consider popping one like Lands’ End’s Women’s UPF Packable Hooded Windbreaker Jacket over a midi floral dress. Or consider pairing track pants with a button-down cardigan combo and sneakers.

These are just a few outfitting ideas if you’re in need of a style refresh here as we transition from spring to summer. Obviously, you have to consider your current closet, budget, and what is functional for your life, but hopefully, some getting-dressed inspirations can be had!
