The United Way of North Central Pennsylvania (UWNCPA) proudly announces that its former leader, Scott N. Lowery, will be honored with the 2025 Douglas C. Dickey Humanitarian Award — the organization’s most prestigious recognition — at its upcoming Annual Awards Celebration and 2026 Annual Dinner on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, in the Grand Ballroom of the Holiday Inn Downtown, Williamsport.
The Dickey Award celebrates extraordinary individuals whose vision, leadership, and generosity have shaped Lycoming, Sullivan, and Tioga Counties for the better. Established in 1947 and renamed in 1997 to honor the late Douglas C. Dickey, a former United Way President lost in the crash of TWA Flight 800, the award has been presented to more than 80 community leaders.
“As a past award recipient myself, I know first-hand the magnitude of this award, and we are pleased to honor Scott, who has dedicated his life to service, particularly in providing opportunities for the youth of our community,” reflected Ron Frick, Chair of the Selection Committee and Past President of UWNCPA. “In addition to Scott’s almost 20 years of service to the organization, his work outside the United Way is perhaps his greatest legacy in the community.” Also, a past recipient and a broadcast partner at the Little League Baseball World Series, Ken Sawyer reflected, “I have seen Scott work year-round to help young people from Little League to high school improve their athletic skills. He uses that time and opportunity to add to the young people’s life skills too. Many parents have seen Scott’s investment in their children’s lives make a huge positive impact.”
After beginning his education in the South Williamsport School District, Scott graduated with a degree in Communications Art from the University of Houston, before serving his country in the United States Air Force. After serving at the Central Region Director for Little League Baseball, Scott returned to his roots as Director of Public Relations & Marketing with Grit Publishing, as a Communications Director with the Lycoming County United Way and an account executive with Lessig & Associates, before returning to the United Way where he served as Executive Director for 12 years.
Lowery enjoys sports and has served as a participant, coach and contributor to the advancement of sport in football, basketball, baseball and softball for almost his entire life. In addition to his on-field involvement, Lowery has also served as the South Williamsport Football Mounties public address announcer for almost 50 years, has coached multiple sports in the South Williamsport School District and is the only individual who has been involved with the Little League Baseball World Series serving in the capacities as a Regional Director, member of the tournament rules committee, member of the charter committee, official scorer of the LLB World Series, PA Announcer of the World Series, newspaper coverage of the series and radio broadcaster of series games.
“All of us live busy lives, and time seems to fly by, but pausing to look around and see how we can help can be an enriching tonic. My experiences with United Way and other community engagements have brought back memories and friendships for which I am grateful,” said Lowery.
The evening will also celebrate leadership and service, with additional honors, including the Douglas J. Shangraw Memorial Volunteer Award, President’s Award, and the Harriett Lenhart Memorial Women’s Leadership Award.
“In my new role, I am amazed at the level of support, monetary and volunteer time that is given back to this United Way. We are so pleased to be able to highlight the generosity of individuals and companies in our community who support our work resulting in a stronger and more resilient community for all,” said Carolyn Hawk, UWNCPA President/CEO.
Thanks to the generosity of past Dickey Award recipient George Tsunis, his wife Olga, and Chartwell Hotels, all net proceeds from the evening will directly support UWNCPA programs.
