60-Degree Style

We are officially in transitional weather season, and I’m living for this time of year! With highs hitting just around 60 degrees and evenings in the 40s, for my money, this is weather at its best.

Besides the crisp autumn air and vibrant foliage, one of my favorite things about this time of year is the strategic layering that goes into outfit planning. I realize that seems odd, as most find the process of balancing warmth, coverage, and comfortability somewhat painful. But with a few go-to combinations incorporating cozy knits, blazers, and longer-length hems, you’ll hopefully hit the mark on dressing for 60-degree weather with the following outfit ideas.

Sweaters are essential for 60-degree style, and while you may normally pair them with jeans, I’d suggest switching up your look with an oversized statement sweater and a midi-length skirt. Layer a V-neck t-shirt underneath, and you can set the sweater aside as the afternoon gets warmer. You can go monochromatic with a skirt and knit in the same shade, like beige or gray. Or create some contrast with a bright skirt and neutral pullover. H&M has a plethora of slouchy sweaters, while Target features a flared midi-skirt in black, navy, red, or olive. Red would definitely be my preference.

Another oversized sweater outfit option is to layer it over a long summer skirt or dress. I like the idea of playing around with texture when you’re contrasting two seasons in one look. A floral, frilly frock under a cable knit sweater is a sweet mix of summer and fall that speaks to the transitional nature of daily temperatures. While a waffle knit sweater over a chambray shift dress is a more minimal take on this outfit combination. I’m loving the cable knit options over at Macy’s. American Eagle has a slew of oversized sweaters in various knits. Just be sure to keep one or two of this past summer’s frocks in your closet, and if it’s not quite time to slip into tights yet, cover your legs a bit more with tall boots.

If you’re looking for more options when it comes to layering with dresses, try a blazer over a fall dress. I’m a fan of doubling down on the office wear mode by pairing a classic-cut blazer with a plaid or striped shirt dress. I’m also a big fan of thrifting for blazers, especially with oversized outerwear being on trend. Some grandpa’s old sports coat is just waiting for you on a rack at the Goodwill. However, if you’re interested in investing in a quality blazer that will last until it’s time for your loved ones to donate your earthly goods to the Salvation Army, then check out J.Crew. For a bit less sticker shock, you can also try J.Crew Factory.

For dresses, I’m liking the offerings at Kohl’s. Their Croft & Barrow knot-waist shirt dress comes in a dreamy black and white buffalo plaid that would create a chic look worn with a black or heathered gray blazer.

I would be remiss if I didn’t include a trench coat and tailored pants as a potential outfit combo for 60-degree days. Banana Republic Factory has a beautiful pair of sculpted bootcut pants on sale in dark camel, black, heathery gray, and an eye-popping purple. I have a pair in my virtual cart as I’m typing this. A well-fit dress pant worn with a turtleneck and a classic trench creates an effortless, as well as a seasonally appropriate ensemble.

For a more dressed-down 60-degree day, you can’t go wrong with jeans and a button-down. Denim is a year-round staple, but I particularly love it in autumn when paired with school-uniform-inspired shirts, like pinstripes and stark white. Style a wide-leg silhouette with a crisp button-down shirt and boots. Go ahead and top off this combo with your blazer for a very preppy-cute look. You can also dress up your jeans with a silk scarf and a wedge bootie. Again, thrifting for scarves can turn up some real gems to give all of your fall outfits an eclectic flair. And DSW has a TOMS Sadie wedge bootie in black to stand up to the splatter of a rainy 60-degree day.

Hopefully, some of these outfit ideas will alleviate any sartorial anxieties you’ve had for these 60-degree days and put a bit of autumnal joy in your everyday style. And yes, I did end up ordering those pants in purple!
