The Best Bob for Your Face

As I sat at my desk the other day, waiting for my first cup of coffee to kick in, I began to hear morning bird songs. Looking out my window, the sky was clear, the sun was bright, and even though it was still bitterly cold, a sense of spring was in the air. With any upcoming change of season, the question begs to be asked: What should I do with my hair? I love the idea of exploring a new haircut for spring. If you’re looking to welcome the spring with a fresh new ‘do, then consider the trending style for 2022, the bob!

You may associate the classic bob with flappers and the roaring twenties of the last century. But it’s remained a common style over the years because of its simplicity and timelessness, with a chin-length bob, in which the hair falls to the jawline being the most common. Well, we are again in the 20s of our current century, and the bob is back in a big way. Of course, not all bobs are the same and, depending on your face shape; you may find one bob more flattering than the standard chin-length.

If you have a rounder face where the sides of your face curve slightly outward, your chin is rounded, and your cheekbones are the widest part of your face, then a long bob or “lob” is the bob for you. This cut has hair the same length all around the head but hits closer to the shoulder. Having a bit more length will draw the eyes down and give a rounder face more angles and dimensions. This is also a great cut if you’re new to shorter hair. The lob is a baby step in giving a short cut a shot without losing too much length.

For those with a square face, where the sides of your face are straight, and your jawline is slightly angled with minimal curve, a mid-length and layered bob is best suited to you. Your strong jawline is a gorgeous asset, but the typical chin-length bob may make it feel more severe. A mid-length cut with subtle layers, maybe throw in bangs, can soften the whole look and help your natural beauty shine through. If your hair is thin or fine, then the layers will also add texture.
An oval face shape looks great with a variety of hairstyles. If your forehead is a tiny bit wider than your curved chin, and your face is longer than it is wide, many would say you are in luck because any bob will suit you! The classic chin-length bob with its jaw-skimming style will break up the longer silhouette and accentuate your neck. Or try an angled bob that is short in the back and gradually transitions to a longer length in the front.

If someone drew lines connecting the center of your hairline to your high cheekbones and down to your pointed chin to create a diamond, then you have a diamond-shaped face. Diamond faces are best served by a bi-bob that accentuates the bi-level area of the face, such as the eyes and cheekbones. The bi-bob is the opposite of the angled bob, in that it’s short in the front, transitioning to long in the back. This bob and face shape will also support a lot of texture in the styling and, if you’re feeling bold, consider a heavy bang.

For heart-shaped faces where your chin is pointed, and your forehead is the widest part of your face, picture an upside-down triangle, then consider the French or European bob. This is another shorter-in-the-front style but is a much more blunt cut than the lob or mid-length bob. Ideally, this short bob reaches more or less to the lips, which may sound bold, but it’s meant to be a statement haircut, so bold is the order of the day. One great advantage to this statement style is that it’s meant to air-dry, so you save time on styling.

Of course, regardless of your face shape, you may not find any of these bobs up your hair follicle alley. But if you’re bored with your current hairstyle or looking to shake things up but not feeling motivated just yet, look to the coming spring for inspiration. It’s the perfect time to refresh your look, whether you go for a bob, shag, or pixie!
