What to Buy When

With a few Presidents’ Day sales lingering and spring (fingers crossed) just around the corner, you may be evaluating your wardrobe in anticipation of springtime closet cleanouts and warmer weather. Or maybe, like me, you just get a rush when getting a deal on clothes and accessories you may or may not need. There are certain times of the year when sales and discounts run deep. And while we are well into the first quarter of 2021, there are deals to be had all year long. Here’s a rundown, month-by-month, of what and when to buy at the best possible price.

January is considered a slow month by most retailers, so to boost business, higher-end items like suits and formal wear are lowered. While you may be too late to score a deal on your next interview suit, you can certainly keep an eye out for suiting separates as retailers try to sell off winter wear to make room for next season’s trends.

Even though Valentine’s day has come and gone, there’s still some February left to make off like a bandit on jewelry promotions. If your special someone did NOT get the hint on the bracelet, necklace, or earrings you had an eye on for V-day, go out and treat yourself while the markdowns last.

March is the time to purchase luggage. As new suitcase styles start arriving in anticipation of summer travel, stores will be hoping to move out last year’s luggage to make room. Whether you need carry-ons or roller bags, next month will be the time to upgrade your baggage. This is also a great chance to snag a new duffel bag.

There’s so much you can say about April; it comes in like a lion, out like a lamb. T. S. Elliot called it the cruelest month and, of course, April showers bring May flowers. That last one, retailers take seriously by stocking up on raincoats. Keeping in mind supply, demand, and timing, stores price raingear to move since there’s a limited period of usability before those May flowers start to bloom.

April is additionally a great time to shop consignment and thrift stores. From April Fools to Memorial Day, spring cleaning is in high gear, which results in an influx of one-of-a-kind pieces (sometimes with the tags still on) at second-hand and charity shops. Online sites like Poshmark and ThreadUp also experience an increase in product, so don’t feel you need to sort through racks and racks to find vintage gems. You can simply scroll from the comfort of your home.

In addition to thrifting in May, you can add workout wear to your seasonal shopping strategy. Whether it’s because it’s finally warm enough to exercise outside or the impending swimsuit season prep is in full gear, athletics apparel can be found at a generous discount at both big box stores and sporting goods shops.

Hold off on buying summer pieces during the month of June. July and August are when summer sales are in full swing. Retailers will be dropping prices throughout July and August on seasonal essentials like sundresses, sandals, tank tops, and shorts to make room for back-to-school shopping. If you can hold off until August, the selection will not be as plentiful as in July, but the discounts will be deeper.

If you end up holding off on retail therapy until August, be sure to put swimsuits on your list. Stores want to clear out summer leftovers to make room for fall merchandise, so the price of swimwear is set to swan dive!

As September sees summer turn toward fall, stores are seeing Daylight Savings looming on the horizon, and sunglasses begin to get marked down. Any leftover summer pieces, in general, are for the taking this month. So be on the lookout for deep, deep discounts on all things warm weather.

By October, fall has settled in, and all those jeans not purchased for back-to-school will start going on sale to make way for the holiday shopping season ahead. This is a great time to try out new denim trends or upgrade your favorite pair with a designer brand.

In November, holiday shopping reaches a frenzy, and deals can be had left and right. Since Black Friday and Cyber Monday promotions often feature store-wide sales, it’s an ideal time to treat yourself to more luxurious items, like cashmere sweaters and designer shoes. Speaking of shoes, incoming shipments of winter boots mean sneaker prices are seriously slashed in November, so whether for fashion or function, add a pair of kicks to your shopping list. Retailers also often put pajama sets on sale in late November. These markdowns are stores’ strategies to entice shoppers to give loungewear as gifts. Instead of gifting jammies to others, gift yourself some new PJs before Christmas eve.

If you’re still looking to score deals by the end of the year, then look no further than outerwear. With the winter season well underway, stores are looking to clear out inventory to accommodate incoming spring collections. Overcoats, trench coats, ski wear, and puffer coats will all be steeply discounted to move in December.

In general, it’s the end of a season that sees the biggest sales. So, if you’re not too concerned with the latest trends or waiting until next year to wear your purchase, it’s best to shop “off” season or at the end of a season for the biggest savings.
