Work From Home Makeup

Moisturizer and Chapstick may be the only two things you currently wear on your face as you work from home. But, on days when you have a Zoom call or planned a virtual hangout, you may feel the need to put in a bit more effort to elevate your bare face to a natural makeup look. Like the current trend of “mullet dressing” (work shirts up top and sweatpants on the bottom), no-makeup makeup is the WFH beauty go-to of the moment. Yes, it may seem counterintuitive to use makeup to look like you’re not wearing makeup; it’s really about utilizing products to enhance your features for a polished, yet low-key look.

The first rule of no-makeup makeup is that less is more. Start with a thin layer of any product you use and build up from there. It’s also important to select your products wisely and focus on which of your features you want to enhance. Having a full face of makeup with a sculpted brow, contouring, full lip, shadow, and lashes is the opposite of the natural look. Pick one and enhance it; don’t ignore the rest of your face; just keep things minimal.

For luminous skin, start with a light layer of a good foundation. Test out a few to find one that leaves you with a finish you like and gives your preferred amount of coverage without feeling cakey. I personally use Glossier’s Perfecting Skin Tint for light coverage with a bit of glow. For a more radiant effect, there’s Clinique’s Even Better Glow Light Reflection makeup that is a moisturizing foundation.

If you want a more vibrant and rosier complexion, you may be able to skip the foundation altogether and instead play up your cheeks. Sephora has Perricone MD No Makeup Blush. Yes, the product name is exactly what you’re looking for. This gel-cream blush adds natural-looking rosiness for a healthy, youthful glow. Wander Beauty features an On-the-Glow Blush and Illuminator, which is an impressive multi-tasking product. This cream can be used on cheeks, lips, eyes, and the body with color on one end and highlighter on the other. Swipe color on the apples of your checks and then highlight along your cheekbone for a glowing, yet subtle look.

Sharp brows will always make you feel more put together. A bit of brow gel, and a few strokes of a brow pencil can make a big impact. I tend to start my brows with a clear mascara, like Maybelline’s Great Lash Washable Mascara to shape and tame my eyebrows. Then I’ll fill in with NYC Fill & Fluff Eyebrow Pomade Pencil and finish up with Glossier’s Boy Brow gel. Don’t be afraid of bold brows, as they are a fantastic way to highlight your features without looking like you’ve put on a ton of product.

If long lashes are more your speed, check out Lancome’s Hypnose Custom Volume Mascara. Combine voluminous lashes with a peach lipstick to boost the natural colors and contours of your face, especially if you are going sans foundation. In fact, regardless of whatever no-makeup makeup you use, a dash of lipstick will instantly add some color to your look and brighten your features. My laptop camera lighting is not the best, and, in some of my first online meetings, I appeared as a cross between a zombie and a ghost. Now I use Marc Jacobs’ Beauty New Nudes Sheer Gel Lipstick from Sephora. In non-traditional nude lip shades like “spiced ginger” and “terracotta pink,” I only look half-dead instead of fully dead on screen. You can, of course, go with a more glamorous lip for online meetings, but for the au natural look, go with some sort of nude-tone color.

Speaking of nude-tones, a swift swipe of eye shadow in a blush or beige shade will give you a quick no-makeup makeup look. A bit of barely-there color has enough boost and contour to your eyelids to look like you’ve gotten plenty of sleep. Bareminerals Gen Nude eyeshadow palette has six shadows to see you through self-isolation into summer. This palette can also be used on cheeks and lips. Just a few quick dabs, and you’re all set for that 8 a.m. meeting, even if you kept waking up from anxiety nightmares every few hours the night before.

As with any makeup, skin prep is key. While you may have rolled back your regular beauty routine during quarantine, you should still be moisturizing and treating your skin with care. So, SPF up for those nature walks, be sure to exfoliate, and hydrate. The smoother and healthier your skin, the less product you’ll need. The less product you use, the more likely you’ll be able to achieve the effect of a natural makeup, and your colleagues and friends will be none-the-wiser.
