In Praise of the House Dress

As the practice of social distancing continues, I think we can all agree that the idea of staying in pajamas all day has lost its appeal. Many of us have been spending these past few weeks at home in sweats, yoga pants, maybe even joggers. But, with warmer weather on the horizon, now is a good time to put away frumpy, lumpy loungewear, and reconsider the classic house dress for spring and summer.

I know, the term “house dress” doesn’t necessarily imply refreshing or stylish. Historically, this type of garment has been a simple dress worn casually at home for household chores. But, today’s house dresses aren’t just glorified aprons. Midi and maxi shifts, t-shirt dresses, caftans, and muumuus all fall under the house-dress roof. Any dress that has pockets, soft closures, room to move, and is machine-washable could be considered a house dress. And, unlike its counterpart, the “day dress,” the house dress is not really meant to be seen. But, hey, none of us are meant to be seen during a stay-at-home order. That doesn’t mean we can’t benefit from some invigorated leisure apparel.

This past winter, I stumbled across Target’s in-store brand Prologue, which is pegged as casual workwear for the 35+ crowd. The dresses on offer here are classic, easy, and very comfortable, perfect for working from home. I really like their short-sleeve, v-necked midi shift with its relaxed, yet sleek silhouette. You can layer a Henley and leggings underneath now, then wear on its own come summer.

Another affordable option for a house frock is Old Navy. Their current casual dress selection definitely leans toward warmer weather, but if you want to stock up for sunnier days, now’s your chance. Their V-Neck Button-Back shift and Sleeveless Striped Linen-Blend Fit & Flare dresses are both on sale, come with pockets, and in relaxed fits.

Woman Within, a plus-sized brand, has a whole department for indoor comfort clothing called “loungers.” Technically, these loose frocks are considered sleepwear, but there are several that would be great for a leisurely day staying indoors. Like the Ombre Zip-Front Lounger comfy-knit jersey that comes in blue, plum, or rosebud, just in time for spring. No matter the season, I’m mad for plaid, and can’t get enough of their Long Seersucker Longer, a snap-front casual dress with a shirred empire waist that comes in blue plaid, teal plaid, and magenta plaid.

Another great brand for lounge dresses is Soft Surroundings. I’m currently having a very hard time not clicking “add to bag” on their Lazy Day Lounger dress. This maxi-knit comes in navy, heathered grey, and wine, and features a drawstring hoodie, roomy kangaroo pocket, dropped shoulders, and long sleeves with thumbholes, which practically screams “comfy cozy.” I also like their Penelope Dress, another hooded knee-length knit piece with a partial zip front, side-seam pockets, and short raglan sleeves.

If you’re looking for something a tad more sophisticated, check out Chico’s. They are currently featuring an easy-going Star Tie-Dye dress with front pockets and a universally flattering fit. I’d also recommend their Maxi Mini-Striped Tee dress rendered in soft cotton, again with pockets, and a V-neckline. Add a cardigan and sneakers for a laidback chic look, which your husband and kids won’t notice or appreciate, but you’ll know you look good.

Most of the above brands skew a bit older, for women in their 40s and beyond. For those of you in your 20s and 30s, consider evolving the house dress idea here in the 2020s and opt for a comfy jumpsuit instead. Knit, pull-on style jumpsuits are everywhere, from mass retailers like Target and H&M to pricier fare from Madewell and independent Etsy sellers. The concept is still the same, have that one piece you pop on to be suddenly dressed for your day, whether you’re homeschooling kids, working from home, tackling home projects, or all of the above.
