Spring, the Other Sweater Weather

Spring can be such a tricky time of year, some days are bright and sunny, while others are wet and muddy. As the days start to get longer, you may be tempted to pull out all of your warm-weather wear. However, this transitional season is still prime sweater weather, unlike crisp fall days that call for chunky cardigans and fair-isle pullovers. Spring sweater weather has a different flavor than your standard winter knitwear. Think cotton over wool and sophisticated neutrals over vibrant patterns. Of course, if it’s one of those freezing spring mornings, you should, by all means, don a winter-weather wool sweater to stave off the cold. On the more temperate days, here are a few spring sweater styling tips.

Depending on each day’s high and low temperature, you want to make sure your sweater will keep you cozy: That’s its job, no matter the season. Wool sweaters will keep you dependably warm, especially for outdoor activities. If you’ll be outside on a brisk spring day, opt for a woolen fisherman type pullover. Make sure you have room for layers underneath, so you can take it off and avoid over-heating once indoors. Try a neutral wool cable-knit over a pinstriped button-up with cropped jeans and hiking boots if you’ll be out and about. Throw on a puffy vest for a sportier look, or a barn jacket for a rustic style.

For more of an inside day, try a merino wool sweater. This is a thinner knit that lends itself to standalone wear. Pair a V-neck light blue sweater with trousers and heeled loafers for work. Try a square silk scarf to keep your neck warm and amp up the sophistication factor. For weekends, a merino turtleneck in chive-green is not only on-trend for this spring, but pairs easily with denim, corduroy, or a jogger-style pant.

Cashmere sweaters will also keep you warm without overheating and are perfect for a semi-sunny day in the 50s. Cashmere is a bit dressier than other wools, so feel free to layer a cashmere crewneck over a floral midi-dress and fancy flats for a romantic look. Or, really bring spring into your style with white denim and D’orsay boots. In fact, white jeans are a great way to transition your more substantial sweaters into spring. A pair of white skinnies and an oversized chunky knit, no matter the fabric, is a functional and fun look for sunny days that are still a bit cold.

As the days get warmer and the lows are no longer hovering around the freezing mark, put your wool away and get out your cotton sweaters. Cotton knits can come in various blends. There’s cotton/wool, cotton/poly, and cotton/linen. I tend toward the 100% cotton or linen blends for the tail-ends of spring sweater season when it’s a bit nippy, but far from frigid. A striped cotton knit can be worn over t-shirts and camisoles with a pencil skirt. Cotton cardigans are ideal toppers for sleeveless silk blouses. For workwear, cotton sweater-blazers, in place of your standard tailored blazer, are an easy swap to signal that spring is almost here.

Another great sweater option for spring is a longer, open-front cardigan that you can wear underneath your coat, and then on its own as the days get warmer. Sweater dresses, first with leggings or tights, then with knee-socks and tall boots. Lastly, wrap-style sweater tops that will give you a more fitted, but still warm look, are super cute with fuller skirts or culotte-style trousers.

As we head into spring, so many sweaters will be going on sale, so now is the time to stock up on knits for this season and for fall. Of course, you don’t have to go out and buy a whole new spring sweater wardrobe. Simply take stock of your current knitwear and pick the right material and weight that are right for the season and right for you.
