Save Room for Dessert

What is your most favorite dessert? Pies, cakes, cookies, puddings, icecream, pastries cheesecakes? There are so many to choose from. Before I had my daughter, Kenzy, I could pass up most sweets. I didn’t crave them much. I crave more salty than sweet. You give me a bag of Middlesworth BBQ chips and I can’t leave them babies alone! But, if you set cookies or chocolate in front of me, I’ll not touch them all day. Now, when I was pregnant with my daughter I started craving ice cream. Like, a lot. My husband would always take me to McDonalds for one of their vanilla cones if it was too late and no ice cream joint was open. Eders Ice Cream in Montoursville is my favorite! Their cookie dough is seriously the best. It was weird because I had never craved sweets like that before!? While pregnant with my son, I craved McDonald’s McGriddles breakfast sandwiches, watermelon and pringles. So the total opposite from my daughter. You wanna know the funny part!? My son, Tyler, favorite things to eat are breakfast sandwiches, watermelon, and has an obsession with Pringles. Then Kenzy has a major sweet tooth! It’s wild! So did they give me the cravings or did I give them the cravings? Hmmmmm…

I definitely enjoy dessert way more now than I did. If you have a good cream filled pie, creme brulee, or cupcake I’m most likely going to indulge. I don’t typically get dessert out to eat, but a few places have my favorites and I’ll get dessert most of the time at these restaurants:

The Sticky Elbow in Williamsport has the most incredible cheesecake, and I’m not a cheesecake person. It’s called Creme Brulee Cheesecake. Yea, you read that right. It’s amazing!!

Johnson’s Cafe in Montoursville has the most incredible Creme Brulee. Topped with just a smidge of fresh cool whip on the side of the dish makes it perfect! Maseto’s in Old Lycoming Township has the best Peanut Butter Pie made by Tammy Evelhair. That lady can cook her buns off! I told her that her crust was unlike any other pie crust I have ever tasted, and that’s saying something because my Liddick family has some amazing pie bakers! My Aunt Sylvia Shumbat and Great Grandmother Mildred Lockcuff can/could make pies like nobody’s business. There was just something different about that peanut butter pie crust that sent my tastebuds wild! (I sound like a typical foodie there don’t I?) Then there was the Olive Garden who had the most delicious Chocolate Caramel Dolcini. I was obsessed with them! Then they done went and broke my heart and quit carrying them. How dare they!? Seriously, when we had a girls night a few months back at the Olive Garden, and the waitress told us there was no more lemon or chocolate caramel dolcini, we were devastated. The girls were cracking up at me and my reaction to our waitress telling me this. Not gonna lie, tears were almost shed. I had a great relationship with that delicious creamy and so decadent dessert. Cake at the bottom and a cream like substance in the middle, then little shaved curls of chocolate on the top. It was heaven on a spoon. Took me awhile to get over that. (Hahaha!) Typical foodie reaction yet again.

Do you have a favorite dessert from a local place in our area? Message me on my Andrea’s Country Home Cookin Facebook page and tell me about it! I’d love to hear from you!

Here is one of my favorite desserts my momma makes. It’s also to die for! At least I know this can never be taken away from me like the darn Dolcini…….

Momma’s Swiss Roll Cake

Ingredients:
• 4 egg yolks
• 1/3 cup sugar
• 1/2 tsp. vanilla
• 4 eggs whites
• 1/2 cup sugar
• 2/3 cup sifted flour
• 1 tsp. baking powder
• 1/4 tsp. salt
• 1/4 cup cocoa

Directions:

Beat egg yolks till thick and lemon colored. Gradually beat in 1/3 cup sugar. Add vanilla. Beat egg whites till soft peaks form. Gradually add ½ cup sugar and beat till stiff peaks form. Fold yolks in whites. Sift together, flour, baking powder, salt and cocoa. Fold into egg mixture. Spread in greased and floured jelly roll pan. Bake at 375’ for 10-12 minutes or until done. Immediately loosen sides and turn out on a towel sprinkle with sifted confectioners’ sugar. Starting at the narrow end, roll cake and towel together. Cool on a rack. Un-roll and spread with your favorite filling. Then roll up.

Momma beats heavy cream, then adds confectioners’ sugar and vanilla for her filling.

Then drizzled melted chocolate as seen in the picture.
