Rider Park

North Central Pennsylvania is the bomb. Yes. We live in an area with several natural treasures. I do my very best to take full advantage, but work and chores seem to get in the way. I prefer to fish and love to kayak. The recent downpours and tornado warnings have limited those opportunities. Hiking is also a passion and I’ve already shared some tales about Worlds End and Jacoby. Perhaps it’s time to tell you about another favorite destination.

Rider Park is 867 acres of tranquil nearby woods that’s available 365 days a year to us lucky residents. It provides a beautiful backdrop where the locals can enjoy some hiking, trail running, mountain biking, and even cross-country skiing. Rider offers 10 miles of trails that lead to three breathtaking vistas. Folks can choose from three major treks that vary in length and difficulty. Visitors can combine the trails for longer hikes or continue on connecting trails in the adjacent Loyalsock State Forest. One leads all the way to Jacoby Falls. The views and surroundings are incredible.

Rider Park is located 6 miles above Montoursville. I’d say the entrance is a few leagues past the junction of Route 973 in Warrensville. Look for a sign and Caleb Creek Road off of Pleasant Valley. Continue on Caleb for 1.7 miles to the top of the mountain. You will eventually find a parking lot at the end of the climb. Picnic tables and portable pots are available, but trash receptacles are not provided. Pack out what you pack in and please remember to take all trash home with you. Your cooperation will only help preserve our Park. Give a hoot sports fans.

The trails are open from dawn till dusk and recreational use of the Park is only limited to activities that blend with its natural beauty. No hunting or trapping. No ATVs or snowmobiles. No booze. No horses and keep those dogs on their leashes. Visitors are expected to honor the rules for recreational use designed to protect the Park, ensure safety and promote an enjoyable outdoor experience.

I have personally hiked all three of Rider’s major hikes and they are all very different. Cheryl’s Trail (Blue) takes you 3.6 miles to the north and features several learning stations. The Katy Jane Trail (Yellow) is 2.5 miles of ups and downs with many impressive views. It is the most scenic loop. Francis X. Kennedy’s Trail (Green) is only one mile and a very popular choice for those speed walkers and runners. Rider actually hosts an annual 5 mile outdoor Rattler race every June. Sorry I’m retired.

Rider Park was a gift from local businessman and civic leader, Thomas J. Rider. He wanted to share his love of the great outdoors with the people of Lycoming County. Mr. Rider believed in an important balance between work, stewardship and outdoor recreation. He also provided the necessary funds for the upkeep. Rider Park is currently owned and operated by FCFPA Properties, Inc., a subsidiary of the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania based in Williamsport. Great stuff and thanks Mr. Rider.

“It’s a true honor to serve as the stewards for Mr. Thomas Rider’s wonderful legacy. This park offers so much to the residents of Lycoming County,” said Jen Wilson, President and CEO of the First Community Foundation Partnership.

I highly encourage you to take a trip to Rider Park soon. It’s the perfect place for any outdoor enthusiast. What a blessing to have something like her in our backyard. Much love. Cheers.
