Before Bed Skin Care

Life can be so hectic. By the time you get home from work, make dinner, clean up from dinner, and wrangle children into the bath, then bed, the last thing you want to do is a multi-step nightly skincare routine. Once you finally have a minute to yourself, it’s easy just to grab a makeup wipe and fall into bed. However, taking care of your skin doesn’t have to be a high-maintenance ordeal. Overnight sleep masks can help you say bye-bye to dry and dull skin and good morning to a fresh and dewy face.

What are sleep masks you may ask? They are usually a cream or gel-like formula that you can slather on before bed and do not require any sort of rinse-off. The better-quality products are more cream-based because water-based masks tend to evaporate. Think of them like a thicker moisturizer that feels surprisingly light on your face. While you sleep, the mask will create a seal to lock in moisture, while allowing ingredients like retinol and peptide to absorb into your skin.

After washing your face at the end of the day, slather on a sleep mask, either with your fingers or a spa facial brush, then lay back and drift off to dreamland. Before your alarm goes off in the morning, your sleep mask will work to regenerate and repair your skin. Unlike traditional clay masks, the ingredients in a sleep mask are designed to release over time, so that when you wake up, your complexion is more radiant.

There are some very pricey sleep mask products out there, but there are also affordable and just as effective options. The Body Shop’s Tea Tree Anti-Imperfection night mask at $22 is great for acne-prone skin. This jelly-like mask easily glides on to hydrate and smooth skin for a velvety soft finish. Revitalize overworked, stressed skin with a nutrient-rich watermelon-scented mask from Bliss. At $13, What a Melon Reviving & De-Stressing Overnight Mask will not only pep up your complexion but also give your olfactory senses a boost. Estee Lauder’s Pink Peony Overnight Water Pack delivers a surge of moisture for just $20. And don’t worry about messing up your pillowcase. These products are non-staining, however, it’s best to start out sleeping on your back as opposed to diving under the covers face-first.

Even if you do have time in the evening to pamper your skin, you can still benefit from a sleep mask when your face needs a bit of a refresher. As the winter months approach, consider using a sleep mask once or twice a week to keep your skin from drying out. If you have a bare bones approach to skincare, i.e., just washing off your makeup, consider using a nightly sleep mask to get started on taking better care of your complexion. Either way, this hassle-free product will benefit your appearance and skin health no matter how often or not you use it.
