Transparency. Efficiency. Accountability.
Derek Slaughter for Mayor

Our City is in a financial crisis. We are more than $23 million in debt and we are broke. We have raised taxes six times in the last ten years to cover our routine expenses and still our police, fire, codes and other City departments are at the bare minimum.

As a Williamsport city councilman, I have been the most outspoken and fiscally responsible member. I consistently question and challenge financial choices and budgets. I need to know the reasons why we are in debt, and, more importantly, YOU need to know the reasons why.

The lack of accountability and transparency at the city level can no longer continue. I have shown the leadership to ask the right questions and to make the hard decisions

It is easy to talk about plans for our future… new business development, better public safety, improved streets and parks. But, that all takes money.

We actually do have enough tax revenue coming in to accomplish these goals if we stop the waste, increase efficiency, and set new priorities. I am uniquely qualified to provide the leadership necessary to fix the financial mess and move our City forward in a new direction. I hold an undergraduate degree in Information Sciences and Technology and a Master’s degree that prepared me to teach math. I have spent my time on Council working with the City departments and know first-hand their problems. In fact, I am the ONLY candidate endorsed by the City employee union, AFSCME. These employees are doing an outstanding job with severely limited resources and lack of adequate staffing, but we need to do more.

As Mayor, I will implement real-time accounting procedures, modernize our technology infrastructure and systems, and provide effective management of our city resources and personnel. I will work together with Council, the department heads and their staffs as a team to eliminate waste, address our strengths and weaknesses, and come up with sensible solutions. In addition, I will conduct an assessment of all City-owned properties and inventory to ensure they are not being left to inefficiency and waste.

Further, I will overhaul our zoning. We all agree we need more industry with high-paying jobs. But, even if a large business wanted to move here tomorrow, we have no place to put them without months of variance hearings and investment into infrastructure for site development. I will designate areas for new businesses, housing, and future growth for our existing businesses. I have already developed and will continue to help the Grow Lycoming initiative with the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce. We have brought together some of the area’s largest employers to strategically find effective ways to market our city and county. An additional part of this effort is to address our need for new housing development. And, I will fast track the Levee Project to benefit the industry we already have.

Public safety is a major concern and, as Mayor, I will make it a top priority. We need more uniformed cops on the street with better equipment. We need increased staffing of our Fire Department so that they not only meet, but exceed their contracted obligations and also so they can finally start doing commercial fire safety inspections again. We need to bolster codes enforcement to ensure our properties are safe to live and work in.

I have based my campaign on three words. Transparency. Efficiency. Accountability. As Mayor, I will always be above board and open to public scrutiny. My door and our city meetings will be always open to the taxpayers. I will make City Hall more efficient and save money. And, I will always be accountable to the taxpayer as to where your tax money is spent. There is plenty of tax revenue coming in to cover essential city services if we live within our means. I know what needs to be done and how to do it.

During my campaign, I have visited every neighborhood in our City and heard the concerns of thousands of taxpayers As Mayor, I will continue to be out in the community talking about the issues we are facing and how we can keep moving forward. I will be an accessible city official and will always have time to listen to what you have to say.

As your City Councilman; as a member of a number of nonprofit boards, city planning boards, and commissions; as a teacher and former head basketball coach; as a property owner, landlord, and a taxpayer; as a husband and a father — I sincerely want to represent you in creating a city worthy of its residents and a government that works for YOU. With the right leadership, we can make Williamsport a hub of business, culture, and innovation.

Your voice and your vote matter. Please vote Derek Slaughter for Williamsport Mayor on Tuesday, November 5th.
