Michael F. Fogarty, 79, of Montoursville, peacefully passed away Thursday, June 4, 2026, at Muncy Place. Born September 24, 1946, in Williamsport, he was the son of the late Matthew F. and the late Anna (Lebet) Fogarty. Mike married the former Canda L. Schwenke on June 21, 1975.
A 1964 graduate of St. Joseph’s High School and a 1968 graduate of Mansfield University, Mike taught fourth, fifth, and sixth grades in the South Williamsport Area School District for 34 years, retiring in 2002. His teaching style and helpful manner were appreciated by both students and faculty members. Following his retirement from teaching, Mike obtained his realtor’s license and worked as an agent for Coldwell Banker Kimble Realty.
Sports were an important part of Mike’s life from a young age. He was a shooting guard on Charley Blackburn’s St. Joe basketball teams, lettering all four years and amassing more than 1,000 points. Mike coached junior high girls’ basketball for 18 years and girls’ tennis for 17 years at South Williamsport. He was an ASA and PIAA softball umpire for 35 years and a PIAA basketball official for 21 years.
Mike began his radio broadcasting career in 1969 as a member of the WMPT and later WRAK radio sports broadcasting teams calling a variety of high school sporting events. A highlight of his broadcasting career were more than 20 years broadcasting games at the annual Little League Baseball World Series. A listener once described his style as “as enjoyable as if you were sitting with a friend talking baseball.” Mike also spent many years supporting press box operations for South Williamsport High School and Lycoming College football. In recognition of his lifelong sports contributions, Mike was inducted into the West Branch Valley Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.
Mike was a man of quiet faith and steadfast loyalty to his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Canda; son Brendan (Jessica) of Havertown; daughter Minda of Montoursville; sister, Julia Johnson, of Williamsport; sister, Maureen (Roger) Pauling, of Manalapan, NJ; brother-in-law, Dennis (Janis) Schwenke, of Point Pleasant, NJ; many nieces and nephews.
