Elsie L. Sylvis, a beacon of love and kindness, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2024 at Valley View Nursing Center. Elsie lived a life marked by devotion to her family, friends, and an unwavering faith that guided her through her 98 years.
Born March 16, 1926 in Avis, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Irene (Ogden) Peterman.
She was a 1944 Graduate of Jersey Shore Area High School. Her professional life was marked by a dedicated career in accounting, where she spent over two decades with the A&P and later Alcan.
She was a woman of many interests, with a special passion for crossword puzzles and a deep love for reading, especially mystery and romance novels. But above all, it was the relationships with her family and friends that Elsie cherished the most.
Surviving is a step-son, Gordon Sylvis of Jersey Shore; her grandchildren, Bruce Wehler (Donna), Pamela Steele, Debra Yaw (Chad), and Doug Sylvis (Denise); 15 great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; a sister, Linda Hastings; and many loved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, William G. Sylvis; three brothers, Roy, Bryan and Glenn Peterman; and a sister Janet Howe.
A funeral service to honor Elsie’s life will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 23 at Sanders Mortuary, 821 Diamond Street, Williamsport. The service will be officiated by the Reverend Dr. Bruce A. Wehler, grandson of Elsie. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service Thursday at Sanders. Burial in Rose Valley Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Elsie’s name may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
