Dorothy E. “Dot” Nestlerode Shaffer, 94, of Castanea, passed away Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at Susque-View Home, Lock Haven.
She was born in Mill Hall on February 6, 1925, the daughter of the late John and Mary Henry McCaslin.
Dot was a 1943 graduate of Lock Haven High School.
She enjoyed making quilts, cooking and baking.
“Dot” was the mom, grandma, and aunt to every child in the Castanea community. She helped with every aspect of the children’s programs at the Castanea United Methodist Church from cherub choir to the youth group and Sunday School Classes. Dot was passionate for all children and all the programs in the Church including worldwide missions. There were many children she fed, clothed, and mentored during all her years in the community. Wonderful youth events were enjoyed at “the cabin” in the summer. During the holidays she was instrumental in planning Halloween parties, Christmas caroling, sled riding events, and holiday parties. None of these occurred without food and treats. Many days were spent ironing and starching crisp the robes and hand tied bows for the cantatas. Dot lived her faith every day and we will never know all the lives that were enriched because they crossed Dot’s path.
Dot was honored to have had worked with children, both in the church and out, since 1946.
