PA 250: Folk Healing in the Keystone State
What: Explore Pennsylvania’s role in nature-based wellness in the 1700’s. Learn how healers utilized knowledge of native trees, shrubs, wildflowers, and other natural materials in their healing remedies. This session will touch on knowledge collected from Indigenous nations and the early settlers of the Appalachian Mountain region. During this session you will be invited to explore the folk healing ingredients still found in Ricketts Glen State Park. This session offers a historical look at wellness practices in the 1700’s. There will be NO diagnosing, treating, or prescribing at this session. This is not a medical plants “how to” program.

Explore Archery
What: If you’ve ever thought about shooting a bow and never had the chance, then this program is for you. Stop by, get some basic instruction, and then actually try your skill at hitting a target. Bird Walk with Doug Gross
What: Doug Gross, retired PA Game Commission biologist and eBird coordinator, will guide us on a bird walk in the woods and shrub lands of Ricketts Glen State Park. We will also practice coding birds for the PA Bird Atlas. Good boots are recommended for walking. Please bring your own bug spray. Lights in the Night: Fireflies
What: Have you ever wondered why fireflies flash on summer nights and if all flashes are the same? We will learn all about the firefly’s life cycle and the meaning of the flashes that brighten our summer nights through an interactive game fun for all ages. We will also spend time observing the fireflies around us while learning about conservation concerns and ways we can help protect fireflies. Dress for the outdoors and bring a red light flashlight if you have one. We will have an optional drive up to the hayfields to check out more fireflies. “Annual Hyner History Happenings”
What: Join the naturalist and guest speakers for a good late morning and afternoon of local history. There will be five programs dealing with the local history of the area including a CCC Program which is ongoing from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., and will be presented by Rowan Crisp, Education and Outreach Administrator for Lumber Heritage Region. It will be a scavenger hunt-like approach to learning about the CCC Camp in Hyner Run State Park and others. Also, a General History of the Area will be ongoing from 11 am – 3 pm, and will be presented by Lou Bernard, overseer of Adult Services at Ross Library and local historian. It will include some of the interesting stories and folklore around the Hyner area. A paper making program will be ongoing from 11 am – 3 pm, and will be presented by Lin Greenaway, Forester of the Sproul State Forest. This will look into some quick history of paper making in the area while also demonstrating how to make paper now. An ongoing logging program will take place from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., and will be presented by Jennifer Haines, Museum Educator at Pennsylvania Logging Museum. It will be about the logging industry in the area and some of the tools used. Another ongoing program will be a program consisting of branding tree cookies for a memento to take home from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and will be presented by Hyner Run campground hosts. 11 a.m.-3 p.m., an ongoing program about Artifacts will be presented by Rich Gulyas, Environmental Education Specialist from Mount Pisgah SP. Feel free to come to all programs or go to some and take a dip in the pool. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate in the program. Program may be modified or cancelled in the event of severe weather or new state or community guidelines. All programs with the exception of the paper making program will be held in the lawn near the amphitheater (by the pool). The paper making program will be held at Pavilion #2. Some may be moved to Pavilion #2 in case of rain.

What: Dominican Plate Dinner. It’s our biggest event of the year! Join us for a night of live auctions, music, raffles, and of course, authentic Dominican fare. Meet some of our very own Williamsport Crosscutters players who help make this night extra special. Raffles tickets for over 40 prizes, a 50/50, wine balloons, and live auction items are purchased at the event. Cash or credit card will be accepted. There will also be a cash bar to enjoy. This is a semi-formal event, so dress to impress and have fun with it! Proceeds go directly to funding our community-driven projects in underserved areas of the Dominican Republic.

What: How would you have fared at getting a fire going in Revolutionary times? We’ll start out by talking about the early history of primitive fire making, then participants will actually use the materials to generate some sparks and fire. **Teens and adults only. PA 250: Folk Healing in the Keystone State
What: Explore Pennsylvania’s role in nature-based wellness in the 1700’s. Learn how healers utilized knowledge of native trees, shrubs, wildflowers, and other natural materials in their healing remedies. This session will touch on knowledge collected from Indigenous nations and the early settlers of the Appalachian Mountain region. During this session you will be invited to explore the folk healing ingredients still found in Ricketts Glen State Park. This session offers a historical look at wellness practices in the 1700’s. There will be NO diagnosing, treating, or prescribing at this session. This is not a medical plants “how to” program.

Explore Archery
What: If you’ve ever thought about shooting a bow and never had the chance, then this program is for you. Stop by, get some basic instruction, and then actually try your skill at hitting a target. Bird Walk with Doug Gross
What: Doug Gross, retired PA Game Commission biologist and eBird coordinator, will guide us on a bird walk in the woods and shrub lands of Ricketts Glen State Park. We will also practice coding birds for the PA Bird Atlas. Good boots are recommended for walking. Please bring your own bug spray. Lights in the Night: Fireflies
What: Have you ever wondered why fireflies flash on summer nights and if all flashes are the same? We will learn all about the firefly’s life cycle and the meaning of the flashes that brighten our summer nights through an interactive game fun for all ages. We will also spend time observing the fireflies around us while learning about conservation concerns and ways we can help protect fireflies. Dress for the outdoors and bring a red light flashlight if you have one. We will have an optional drive up to the hayfields to check out more fireflies. “Annual Hyner History Happenings”
What: Join the naturalist and guest speakers for a good late morning and afternoon of local history. There will be five programs dealing with the local history of the area including a CCC Program which is ongoing from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., and will be presented by Rowan Crisp, Education and Outreach Administrator for Lumber Heritage Region. It will be a scavenger hunt-like approach to learning about the CCC Camp in Hyner Run State Park and others. Also, a General History of the Area will be ongoing from 11 am – 3 pm, and will be presented by Lou Bernard, overseer of Adult Services at Ross Library and local historian. It will include some of the interesting stories and folklore around the Hyner area. A paper making program will be ongoing from 11 am – 3 pm, and will be presented by Lin Greenaway, Forester of the Sproul State Forest. This will look into some quick history of paper making in the area while also demonstrating how to make paper now. An ongoing logging program will take place from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., and will be presented by Jennifer Haines, Museum Educator at Pennsylvania Logging Museum. It will be about the logging industry in the area and some of the tools used. Another ongoing program will be a program consisting of branding tree cookies for a memento to take home from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and will be presented by Hyner Run campground hosts. 11 a.m.-3 p.m., an ongoing program about Artifacts will be presented by Rich Gulyas, Environmental Education Specialist from Mount Pisgah SP. Feel free to come to all programs or go to some and take a dip in the pool. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate in the program. Program may be modified or cancelled in the event of severe weather or new state or community guidelines. All programs with the exception of the paper making program will be held in the lawn near the amphitheater (by the pool). The paper making program will be held at Pavilion #2. Some may be moved to Pavilion #2 in case of rain.

Dominican Plate Dinner
What: Dominican Plate Dinner. It’s our biggest event of the year! Join us for a night of live auctions, music, raffles, and of course, authentic Dominican fare. Meet some of our very own Williamsport Crosscutters players who help make this night extra special. Raffles tickets for over 40 prizes, a 50/50, wine balloons, and live auction items are purchased at the event. Cash or credit card will be accepted. There will also be a cash bar to enjoy. This is a semi-formal event, so dress to impress and have fun with it! Proceeds go directly to funding our community-driven projects in underserved areas of the Dominican Republic.

Flint and Steel Firestarting for Beginners
What: How would you have fared at getting a fire going in Revolutionary times? Folks who’ve never used flint and steel before are invited to try their hand at getting sparks and fire the old-fashioned way. We’ll start out by talking about the early history of primitive fire making, then participants will actually use the materials to generate some sparks and fire. **Teens and adults only. Makers Market
What: Makers Market featuring local growers, bakers, and handcrafted goods. Shop fresh produce, homemade breads, unique crafts, and more while supporting local vendors in a family-friendly atmosphere. Fry Bros will also have a beer tent for sampling Pennsylvania crafted beer sold at our locations as well!
When: Every other Saturday May 30th-Oct. 17, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (tentatively).
