Williamsport Sun: October 4, 1954 – Officer “No. 1” Looks Back Over 25 Years of Service

Patrolman “Number One” starts his 26th year with the Williamsport Police Department tomorrow.

One is the numerical designation on the badge of W. Max Blair, who this afternoon at 4 o’clock ends 25 years of duty with WPD.

Third oldest officer on the 54-man police force. Mr. Blair holds the “number one” designation by being the senior patrolman. The two officers who have been with the force longer are Lt. Clifford Fleegor and the other is Sergeant John W. Lomison.
In 25 years as a city officer Mr. Blair has seen the number of vehicles increase from a “Black Maria” and Model “A” cruiser, to a modern, radio-equipped using organization.

Retirement? “Not yet,” says Mr. Blair emphatically, giving you the strong impression that such a thing is a long way off at this time.

Mr. Blair started on the police force at midnight, October 5, 1929. He hadn’t even had time to procure an officer’s uniform, when at five past midnight he was on his first case. He had only been issued a badge and gun at that early stage of his career.

One of the things that Mr. Blair will tell you about these 25 years as a Williamsport police department has become recognized an efficient and well-run modern body. For this he will give the major share of the credit to John G. Good, head of the bureau of police since 1933.
