The hill climbing contest of the Williamsport Automobile Club, the first race of its kind ever held, in this locality, was successfully carried out Saturday afternoon and without any more serious accident than the casting of a tire by the victorious machine.

The winner was the big Matheson car which was sent here by the Matheson Company under the charge of expert drivers to show what it could do. The local agency for this machine has only recently been taken by Rothfuss and Howard and in their interest the Matheson people put forth their best efforts. The cars were handled by their best experts and where stripped for racing. The local machines were handled by local drivers and were not stripped, the local agents of other makes preferring to let the public see what the machines would do as roadsters, with all the boxes on, rather than racing machines.

Another feature was the racing of machines of all powers in the one race so that all were not of the same classification.

The course was from the clubhouse to the top of Vallamont Hill, was 1 1/3 miles long and ranged in grade from 8 -20 percent, it has five sharp curves on it which make it particularly dangerous. It was crowded with spectators from start to finish, most of them seeing an automobile race for the first time
