Williamsport today joined other cities in the United States to observe the first Armed Forces Day.
Climaxing a week of activities to demonstrate to the public the readiness of this country’s armed forces. An exhibition at the Naval Reserve armory provided a cross-section picture of the readiness of those forces. The theme is “Teamed for Defense.”
During the afternoon, aircraft flew over the city to demonstrate the progress in Air Force weapons. There were Civil Air Patrol craft, long range bombers, heavily armed pursuit planes, a Navy blimp and the latest development in high- speed aircraft, jet propelled planes.
In the near vicinity of the armory there the latest in Army and Navy mechanized equipment was displayed.
The teamwork necessary to manipulate this equipment was ably demonstrated by the members of the various branches of the Armed Forces.
Inside the Naval Reserve Training Center during the demonstration, both air search and surface search radar were in operation. The approaching aircraft were tracked by these devices and persons watching the radar view scopes could see the approach of the aircraft long before they could be heard.
At a banquet this evening in the Elks auditorium, Maj. General James Kirk, head of the Army Field Ordnance Service will speak on the development of new weapons by the Armed Forces.
Dr, George H. Parkes in the capacity of chairman of the national defense civilian advisory committee for Williamsport, will also be at the speaker’s table.
