The First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania (FCFP) is pleased to announce more than $500,000 in improvements will soon be made at Rider Park.
In 2021, FCFP received a Community Conservation Partnerships Program grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). Additional funds from Lycoming County Act 13 Legacy Funds and private donors will help to make this project a reality.
Park improvements will begin in early summer and take roughly six weeks to complete. Limited Park closures are anticipated and will be posted on FCFP’s social media and website.
Improvements will include an expanded parking area, one-way traffic loop to accommodate large vehicles, picnic pavilion, rain gardens and an upgraded information kiosk. A new park entrance with stone pillars will greet visitors.
“We are extremely excited to finally see this project come to fruition. These improvements honor the legacy of Thomas Rider to provide Lycoming County residents opportunities to connect with nature through reflection, recreation, and education. This project is part of FCFP’s long term vision to enhance the Rider Park experience.” says FCFP Chief Financial Officer, Steve Simms. “We are thankful to our partners at DCNR, the Lycoming County Commissioners, and to our donors for allowing this vision to become a reality.”
According to the DCNR website, “DCNR is committed to expanding recreational opportunities and outdoor recreation infrastructure in Pennsylvania.” Secretary of DCNR, Cindy Adams Dunn, said “the Department is committed to building community conservation partnerships with local governments and nonprofit organizations to protect critical natural areas and open space, develop greenways and trails, provide quality park, recreation and conservation opportunities, and to improve the quality of life in Pennsylvania’s communities.”
Owned and operated by FCFP, the park is private land made available for public enjoyment. Rider Park was a gift from the late Thomas J. Rider, who wanted to share his love of outdoor recreation with the community. The park is a fitting tribute to a man who balanced work with volunteerism and recreation. Located in Lycoming County, north of Williamsport, PA, the park offers 10 miles of beautiful trails leading through woodland and meadows.
