Starting March 1, 2024, Lycoming County residents and the surrounding area will have another location to recycle their household batteries (single use and rechargeable). Lycoming County Resource Management Services will be accepting batteries at the landfill, 447 Alexander Drive, Montgomery, for no charge. The public may still take rechargeable batteries to accepting locations like Staples and Lowes. To find other locations visit Call2Recycle.org.
Batteries should never be thrown into the trash or recycling bins, they are a fire hazard and can cause harm in collections trucks, at the landfill, and in the recycling center. Just last year LCRMS landfill had two fires suspected to be caused by lithium batteries. In addition, the recycling building had many near missed fires.
At home, store the batteries by taping its terminals (shiny sides) with packing/clear tape and do not store longer than one year. Batteries are in many items throughout the household, such as in power drills, toys, electric toothbrushes, hearing aids, and other items.
Acceptable batteries to bring to LCRMS include the following: alkaline batteries (AA, AAA, etc.), lithium batteries (single-use, button batteries, and rechargeable), Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH), Damaged/Broken/Swollen batteries (call first for instructions), and battery containing units (items with batteries that cannot be taken out, like an electric toothbrush). LCRMS CANNOT accept vapes or electric vehicle batteries.
Each battery should be separated by chemistry type. When bringing these items to LCRMS, please proceed to the scalehouse to notify the weighmaster what you have. There is a separate area to deposit the batteries.
Thank you for your recycling participation and your help to prevent potential fire hazards. For additional information, please visit our website http://www.lcrms.com/batteries.
