Williamsport Sun: January 2, 1935 – Bucknell in Easy Victory Over Miami Thundering Herd Tramples Florida Eleven, 26-0, In Orange Bowl Battle

There were no excuses today from University of Miami gridmen for the 26-0 trampling they suffered at the hands of the Thundering Herd of Bucknell in the first annual New Year’s Day Orange Bowl Game.

One Miami player bruised and worn by the fight to stave off the undeniable thrusts of the Lewisburg, Pa. eleven, expressed the team’s sentiments when he said, “They outweighed and outclassed us—they simply were the better team.”

The overmatched Miamians on the defensive for the entire game, got only three first downs, one of them on a penalty.

Even the heat, long counted upon by the Miamians, failed to slow the invaders. Instead of the Bisons wilting as the tropical sun bore down on the clashing elevens playing in Miami’s new stadium, it appeared that the Hurricanes were the sufferers. Approximately 5,000 watched the intersectional contest.

The first touchdown came on a pass Jenkins, substitute halfback to Smith, fullback from the Miami 33-yard line.

The final two Bucknell touchdowns came in quick succession in the final period.

Bucknell’s last tally came about indirectly as the result of a Miami fumble at its own 10-yard line.
