The Pennsylvania Department of Highways is planning to move its district offices from here in about a year, it was announced today.
The State Department of Property and Supplies in Harrisburg called for bids due June 25 for the construction of a highway district office in Montoursville.
The new one-story U-shaped brick building will be located on a lot across the street from the PDH’s Lycoming County garage at 715 Jordan Avenue. It will include a large drafting room, offices for the engineers, a conference room, file rooms, and storage rooms in the basement.
A spokesman for the PDH office here at 28 East Third Street, said the construction probably would take a year. He said the plans for approval have been in Harrisburg “for some time.”
The Williamsport office occupies the second and third floor at the East Third Street address. The spokesman said the office has been “cramped for space.”
About 65 are now employed at the office and many others assigned to the Williamsport office are in and out.
The new building in Montoursville will be similar to the one just built in Allentown. Russel R. Boyer, former engineer here, heads the Allentown office.
Owen Beckley heads the office here. The office has been at its present location since January 2, 1928.
The Williamsport district includes the following counties, Lycoming, Clinton, Northumberland, Montour, Columbia, Snyder, Tioga, and Union.
The job at Montoursville also includes the relocation of the two sheet metal buildings now situated on the site of the proposed building.
