Williamsport Sun: February 22, 1923 – A Motorist Suggests 1-Way Traffic on Market Street

Following several suggestions for the traffic problem in Williamsport coming as a result of The Sun’s request to readers to write their ideas for this paper. More will be published tomorrow.

Editor, Williamsport Sun
My dear Sir,

Replying to your invitation on the front pages of the Williamsport Sun on Saturday, as to the possible solutions of the traffic problem, I have the following suggestion.

Make Market Street from Third to Fourth street, a one-way street, if necessary, having the trolley company double track it for that distance, this is in order that the Vallamont, East End and Cemetery cars need not make the loop, which is the greatest nuisance the motorists have to contend with at both Third and Pine and Fourth streets.

After this nuisance were eliminated the Third Street car going west should stop on the far side of Pine Street, this meaning that all traffic moving westward need not be held on the side of Pine Street and if they really were in a hurry they could go out Pine Street and up Fourth Street.

To make Pine Street, one of the busiest streets in the city, one-way would be unfair to the motorist and would not really relieve the situation very much, as cars having business on Pine Street if it were made a one-way street would simply go around a block and come on Pine Street the way it was open and would not relieve the situation as to the number of cars moving over that section of the street.

I have driven a car over the city streets ever since moving here two years ago, and for the number of cars on the streets, must admit that it has the crudest system of a city I have ever visited.

Another thing is that the street cars invariably seem to have the right of way; that is fine in the summertime, but in the winter with the streets as they are at the present, they too should use judgement but to note the attitude of some of the motormen for just a short while would convince one why they are driving the street cars instead of their own.
