Bingo, Boxing and a Burger

I appreciate when nonprofit organizations come up with new and creative ways to raise money. The American people are the most generous folks in the world; they are also the most asked for charitable donations.

Your local business community is always on the front lines when it comes to donations, funding, and sponsorship. They get approached by everyone about everything that is important to the person asking. And quite frankly, that’s the way it should be. In small-town American, the stronger the local business base and the more they give back, the more stable the economic outlook and quality of life. This is why I constantly beat the drum for folks to spend money within their local business community whenever possible. It’s just plain common cents.

So, here’s something you don’t see every day, The Knights of Columbus Council 14329 from Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Montoursville are putting on a Spring Sports Spectacular focused on the great outdoors we all enjoy. The big draw for the event is gun bingo. That’s a little different than the bingo games Nanny Webb took me to at Messiah Lutheran in Southside when I was young. When she or I had the lucky numbers, my grandmother allowed me to choose an 8-pack of little cans of Donald Duck Orange Juice. I thought that was the coolest thing at the time. My grandmother always loved to gamble and was very lucky at it. That’s how I got to go to Disney World for the first time, but that’s a story for another day as I’m getting off track.

So, back to the Knights of Columbus and their upcoming event, I think this is absolutely great for many reasons, especially the one I stated at the beginning of my column. In addition, you all know I’m a big 2nd Amendment believer, and the March 5th date is a great kick-off to an early Spring outdoors. The get-together is being held at Bald Birds Brewery in Jersey Shore, which I’m told by many is a great venue. Much more information can be found below. This Knights of Columbus Sports Spectacular seems to fit perfectly into our little corner of Penn’s Woods. I would also like to put the crosshairs on the fact that only 325 tickets are available, and you must have a ticket to enter. So, if interested, get those tickets now before it’s too late.

I wish Nanny Webb were still around, I would have her seated right in the front row, and of course, I would be by her side. The prize for winning one of their 20 games of gun bingo sounds a lot better than Donald Duck Orange Juice at this point in my life.

The Liberty Arena downtown is an amazing facility. There is so much to do there for kids of all ages and so much potential for hosting a variety of events. The words “Let’s Get Ready to Rumble” will soon be heard, as my friend John Powell and Vicious Promotions will be presenting “Show-Down at The Arena.” A fight card of young boxers ready to put their skills on display.

The fists will be flying inside the Liberty Arena on Saturday, February 26th.

If you remember, Webb Weekly was proud to be a sponsor of “Boxing in the Park” this past summer. The event held under the big top at Elm Park was filled with dynamite action from start to finish. John Powell, through his Williamsport School of Self-Defense/Fourth Street Boxing Club, does a great job of providing an outlet for young men and women to learn about self-defense, boxing, life, and much more. He uses a family approach and tough love to help many individuals who are considered high risk develop focus, channel their energy, and build discipline. He, along with his staff, do a great job of coaching them up and preparing them for the action inside the ring. There will be a minimum of 16 bouts featuring local talent and teams from Allentown, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Newark.

We will have much more about “The Showdown at the Arena” next week. For additional information, see page 23, Vicious Promotions Presents. If you would like to sit ringside at the Webb Weekly table for a great afternoon of boxing, be one of the first four folks to reach out to me. You will win two tickets for the Showdown and a gift card for a great burger and beverage at Scorz Bar and Grill. As always, my contact info is on page 4. Good luck to all!

If you are interested in attending, the event is sure to be a sellout. For additional info or to purchase tickets, call 570-916-6812.

Let’s all be safe out there.

God Bless America.
