Williamsport Sun: December 8, 1941 – WE ARE AT WAR!

The question of joining the World War or refraining from participating in it as a matter of difference among us no longer exists.

The answer has come — we are at war!

The immediate decision was not of our making. It was made up for us by a nation which a generation of Americans has looked upon as the most likely, at some time nor another to seek war upon us,

Japan has chosen war. She has chosen to launch it under circumstances involving so much treachery and deceit that by her own act she intensifies American feelings against her and solidifies American opinion, wiping out by her misguided act the bitter dissension that has divided our people.

It is apparent to most Americans that we are at war not only with Japan but with her partners as well. No one can doubt Japan’s course was decided by her Axis affiliation. It may even be that Hitler dictated Japan’s course in negotiation with her diplomats continued with repeated protestations of hope for peace, up until the very moment that bombs began death and destruction upon Hawaii. The strategy that Japan has followed closely matches the Hitler pattern as demonstrated in Europe — discussing peace while preparing for sudden military action without warning.

We must forego arguments as to right or wrong of the course that has led us to our present situation. We must forget all differences which have divided us. Leaders of the anti-war movement have pledged united cooperation to the only end which any American has a right to think of — complete victory, however long it may be delayed and whatever the cost.
