15th Annual Balloonfest, Air Show and Much More To Take Place September 11 and 12

In the late 1960s, there was a popular song called “Up, Up and Away In My Beautiful Balloon” by the Fifth Dimensions; well, on the weekend of September 11 and 12, there will be many balloons going “Up, Up and Away” as the 15th Annual “Balloonfest, Air Show and Much More,” is held once again at the Lycoming County Fairgrounds in Hughesville. Parking is free. They are bringing back some of the favorite performers and attractions and adding a few new things as well.

“Balloonfest” is known for offering a unique, family-friendly, affordable event with something for everyone. This year’s activities will include hot air balloon launches (weather permitting), air show performances, ATV drag races, BMX performances, heavy equipment rodeo, exhibits, vendors, shows, a laser light show, and “so much more.”

Organizers have contracted with at least a dozen hot air balloon pilots for those who wish to fulfill that “bucket list experience” of riding in a hot air balloon. In addition, weather permitting, there will be a tethered balloon for those who want the “abbreviated experience,” and Balloonmeister Rebecca Elkins oversees all balloon activities.

The Rotary Club of Montoursville started the event as a way to raise Rotary awareness and exemplify the Rotary motto: “Service Above Self.” Within a few years, the Rotary Clubs of Hughesville, Muncy, and Williamsport joined the efforts. In the past year, the event has been designated as a 501c3 non-profit, and their team includes several non-Rotarians, but truly, all members have that “heart for service.” Rotary Club members welcome any volunteer who wants to be part of something that is only created by working together and sharing ideas, tasks, responsibilities, and yes, fun.

Air show performers this year are Paradigm Aviator, Jason Flood Airshows, Rick Volker Airshows, and Geronimo Skydiving. The Airboss is Todd Cameron, and the air show announcer is “Fast Eddie” Leuter. Weather permitting, air show performances will happen at 11 a.m., 3 p.m., and 7:15 p.m. on Saturday and again at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

A favorite experience for many is Saturday evening’s 25-minute laser light show by Accent Lighting choreographed to a soundtrack created by Datman Productions. With this event happening on the 20th anniversary of 9/11, the soundtrack has been created to think back to that tragic experience and honor all those who lost their lives, the first responders, and those who have fought, and still fight, for our freedoms.

“Along with the team that works to make this event happen each year, we realize we could not do this without the sponsors and providers of services and goods,” Sandy Spencer, event chairperson, told Webb Weekly. “We thank every business or person who answers with a ‘yes’ when asked if they can help with a particular need. This also includes those who support the event as a vendor and the many volunteers who join in the activities for just a few hours at the event.”
