Williamsport Sun: July 10, 1933 – Bus Parking Area Back in Square Again

Market Square was approved by city council this morning as the bus terminal and transfer point of the Williamsport Transportation Company.

Following receipt of a letter from A. R. Bush, president of the bus company, setting forth seven reasons why his dispatchers and bus operators recommend this use of the space in Market Square for parking and transfer purposes. Councilman C. Grant Flexer moved that the change back to the square be authorized by council.

The motion was approved by council without dissent.

Today’s action will mean the abandonment of the arrangement for parking of buses on both sides of West Third Street, between Pine and Court streets, which were put in place temporarily several weeks ago to afford the public an opportunity to determine a proper terminal and transfer point.

Council did not indicate this morning whether or not parking privileges will be restored on the south side of West Third Street after the removal of the bus zone.

The Williamsport Transportation Company requested and received, parking spaces in Market Square from Market Street west: space for two buses on East Third Street, at the northwest corner of the Third and Market Street intersection, space for three buses on the west side of North Market Street, entering the square, and space for one bus on the west side of South Market Street at the northwest corner of Third and Market streets.

The parking area at West Third and Pine streets was reduced to 40 feet at the northeast corner. The company asked for 75 feet.

Mr. Bush recommended the removal of existing traffic standards and trolley safety zones and the substitution of one suspended traffic light.
