Williamsport Sun: June 25, 1926 – Big Black Bear Makes Visit to Cottages at Eagles Mere Helping Himself to Eatables

Reports of a visit by a large black bear to cottages at Eagles Mere have reached this city and been verified by local men who have been working at the summer resort during the week.

The first visit by the bear was made Wednesday night about 10 o’clock when the occupants of a cottage, residents of Washington, D.C., heard a disturbance on the porch. A call was sent to the Forest Inn hotel that an animal was prowling around the cottage and two men responded. As they approached the cottage, they fired several shots, and this frightened the bear away. Not able to locate it, the men returned to the hotel. An investigation showed that the animal had upset the refrigerator, torn the door open and had consumed all the contents except a bottle of milk. Included in the contents were two large hams, some bacon, and other eatables.

Less than an hour after the first visit the occupants of the cottage were again disturbed by noises on the porch and another call was sent to the Forest Inn, but the approach of the men again frightened the animal away.

On Thursday noon, the third visit of the animal was reported and this time men responding to the call saw a large black bear making off into the woods.

Last summer three large bears were trapped at the resort after numerous visits had been made to the cottages by the hungry animals.
