Grit: June 11, 1950 – City Recreation Program Will Begin June 19

Williamsport’s recreational program will open officially for the 1950 season next week.

Under the direction of Marshal R. Laird, recreation director, this year’s activities constitute four general programs. They are playground, elementary vacation playtime, tennis and “A Day in the Country.”

The city’s 12 playgrounds will open June 19 to children for a 10-week session. Each park will have supervised programs between 9 a.m. and noon and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, except Brandon and Memorial Parks, which will have supervised activities between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Mr. Laird stressed last week that a staff leader, who is qualified in first aid, swimming, and other specialized fields, is assigned to each playground. Rupert C. Morgan, supervises the leaders.

Among the many activities scheduled for the playgrounds this year are shows, contests, and sports tournaments. In addition to “special nights,” other events are planned individually by staff leaders for their playgrounds.

The recreation commission will begin instruction at the 12 tennis courts in Memorial and Brandon Parks on June 19. Sessions will be held between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday for 10 weeks.

A new program titled “A Day in the Country,” will be inaugurated this year. It is more or less an outgrowth of the swimming program adopted last year after the municipal beach was closed due to polluted water.

Beginning June 19, 200 boys and girls from the playgrounds will spend the day at the Consolidated Sportsmen’s Memorial Park. Groups from certain playgrounds will visit the park on designated days of the week, Mr. Laird pointed out.

The area around the creek has been adapted for this year’s new program through the cooperation of the Consolidated Sportsmen.
