Spring Trends 2021

One of the things I love about spring is switching out my cold-weather gear for warmer-weather apparel and taking stock of the upcoming season’s trends. This spring, like last spring, will be a bit different, and yes, it may seem frivolous to think about fashion or shopping, but most would agree that a bit of online shopping can do the soul some good; they don’t call it retail therapy for nothing. Here’s a rundown of some of the must-have pieces for the season in case you are in the market to revive your spring/summer wardrobe for 2021.

Whether you go for the classic La Coste polo with the little alligator or an updated knit version from J.Crew or Banana Republic, a polo-style top will be supreme this spring. This shirt walks the fine line between casual and formal. Not as laidback as a t-shirt, nor as stuffy as a button-down, a polo, whether long or short-sleeved, nicely highlights the face (hello Zoom) for working from home but is still a functional garment on the tennis court and golf course. Polos feel a bit more dressed up without having to put in as much effort as more formal workwear, plus they look good with skirts, shorts, and jeans.

Polos also look great with relaxed trousers. This spring, it’s all about loose and relaxed pants that strike the perfect balance of comfort and style. You can tuck your polo into Target’s wide-leg bi-stretch pants paired with sneakers and a denim jacket for errands. Or wear a printed silk blouse with linen pull-on pants from Old Navy, styled with an oversized blazer and flat sandals for an outdoor dinner date.

In line with a looser silhouette, feel free to take a break from your skinny jeans this spring and go for a relaxed fit. Fresh and cool, baggy jeans are easy to wear with everything from t-shirts, tank tops, and cropped sweater tops. Zara’s paperbag jeans come in five different shades. Personally, I’m a fan of the darker wash, and each pair is partially made with recycled cotton. Levi’s has a high loose hemp jean that would be great for a long walk paired with a fleece zip-up and flat boots here as the season unfolds. Come June, wear them with a peasant blouse and open-toed flats for drinks on the deck.

As for dresses, maxi and prairie dress styles are still popular. It’s never a bad idea to take a bohemian bent with spring style. Florals, paisley, ruching, and crochet are seasonally appropriate and usually figure-flattering. Check out Bohme or Three Birds Next for boho-chic dresses to wear this Easter season. If you’re feeling a bit more daring, then consider the chic backless or cut-out dresses that are gaining popularity. Lulus’ A La Mode black midi dress features a lower back cut-out and dramatic bateau neckline, while the longer length balances out the show-off of skin. Or check out the pandemic ‘It’ dress from Nap. Their Bunny Strap dress is the perfect spring/summer loungewear with its A-line silhouette, above-the-waist gathering, and low-scoop back.

All things comfy and soft are still on trend this season, so lean in with a pair of house slippers. Personally, I wear slip-on sneakers at home, but I’m warming to the idea of cozy fleece-lined slippers like L.L. Bean’s daybreak scuff slippers in a rustic bluebird motif. Or a slipper sock from Bombas with their brushed lining and silicone grippers; they pair perfectly with leggings and a long-sleeved tee for an at-home movie night.

Lastly, accessories! After several seasons of chunky chains, long necklaces are back in style. Whether a single strand or a thin chain with an elegant pendant, lengthier jewelry fits right into the easy and refreshingly cool vibe for this spring and summer. Etsy is a great resource for eccentric options like brass charms or feathers at the end of a longer necklace. Or obsidian pendants with silver or gold fashionings. Kohl’s features a lengthy leaf pendant necklace that would pair perfectly with a bohemian dress for a special occasion or a turtleneck and loose trousers for every day.

As we welcome a new season, and spring especially is inherently hopeful, it’s a wonderful time to refresh not only your mindset but also your wardrobe. Whether you go for the latest trends or are just interested in trying something new, remember, this spring, it’s all about looser fits, long-lean silhouettes, and comfort with a little bit of skin thrown in.
