Grit: March 6, 1960 – Final Polio Shots in Series Set for March 25th at Lodge

Free Polio shots will be given on Friday, March 25 by Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 145 in the third and final phase of the mass inoculation.

About 5,000 doses of Salk Polio vaccine will be administered by volunteers from state and local medical organizations assisted by members of the National Foundation of the Moose and its auxiliary. First, second, third and booster shots will be available. Begun last July, the program began with 2,025 persons getting first shots. In August 1,700 received second, third and booster shots while another additional 2,900 persons received their first inoculations. Most of the recipients were children.

To prevent inclement weather from interfering with the campaign, the lodge will open to those awaiting inoculations. Last summer lines were formed in the street.

Groups assisting with the mass inoculations will include the Lycoming County Medical Society, nurses from the state health department, the Williamsport Hospital Nurses Alumni Association, local foundation workers lodge members and Chapter 384 of the Women of the Moose.

Chairman of the program, which is a gift to community on the occasion of the lodge’s 50th anniversary, is William K. Snyder.

For sponsoring the program and purchasing the serum the lodge as been given the Grit Publishing Company Award for Meritorious Service and a Certificate of Appreciation from the National Foundation sponsor of the new March of Dimes.
