Safe Kids Lycoming County – Winter Safety Tips By Melissa Farenish, Safe Kids Lycoming County

Winter is finally here and for many children, it doesn’t mean the end of outdoor fun. From sledding to skiing, snowmobiling to ice skating, children find lots to do when the snow starts to fall.

Safe Kids Lycoming County reminds you to observe some simple safety tips during the winter season:

For sledding, find a good hill with a clear path and safe finish area.

For snowmobiling, it is recommended children be at least age 6 before riding. Make sure your child wears a helmet. Children under the age of 16 should not operate the snowmobile.

Children who are beginners to skiing should take lessons.

Ice skating on a frozen pond or lake can be dangerous. Even if it looks frozen, ice may not be thick enough for skating. Skating at an ice rink is a safer option.

Dress warmly. Layers keep children dry as well as warm.

Encourage children to drink plenty of water.

It’s a good idea to have children come inside periodically to prevent hypothermia and frostbite.

When properly prepared, the winter wonderland can be a safe and fun-filled adventure.
