Gazette and Bulletin: July 30, 1937 – Over One Thousand Attracted by Baby Parade

Over one thousand persons witnessed the annual Baby Parade conducted last night as the feature of the second evening’s program for the Lycoming Presbyterian Church festival in Newberry.

Gathered along the course of the parade, from Diamond Square to Arch Street on West Fourth Street then south to the church, the group witnessed a parade in which between 125 and 150 children participated.

Following the feature, most of the audience adjourned to the church grounds for a concert by the Sunday School Orchestra under the direction of Walker Smith.

Other entertainment was provided through the novelties of a country store, a fishpond, a novelty booth, candy, refreshment, and home baked goods stands.

Tonight, the ancient costume parade will be held. Those participating will form in Diamond Square at 6:30 o’clock with the parade scheduled to move at 7:00 o’clock. The orchestra will furnish music.

Outstanding in last night’s award was the one for the most ingeniously decorated carriage. The prize was won by Becky Wendle, one-year-old participant, who was riding in a buggy trimmed with mountain ferns. She was seated in a bed of garden flowers.

Jerry Lee Miller won for the prettiest carriage; Betty Louise Guinard, six months, for the most original costume. Robert Wagner and Shirley Lousie Buser won portraying a bride and groom.
