Grit: January 29, 1961 – City Dime Store Commences Big Modernization Program

S.S. Kresge Company is undertaking a vast modernization at its 5 and 10 cent store at 431 Pine Street. Workmen from the Jacob Gehron Company Inc. are removing counters, repairing floors and laying asbestos tile in the renovations that will include new display counters and fixtures and seven check-out counters similar to those at super markets.

“The work is part of the company’s trend to modernize its downtown stores everywhere in order that they compare with newer stores at shopping center locations,” said Donald L. Dresibach, store manager. The nearest Kresge store with a similar operation is located in Camp Hill.

Some employees will be eliminated in the process, according to Mr. Dreisbach.

“Some of our part-time help will no longer be needed and we should need less help during Easter and Christmas time,” he said.

Six check-out counters will be set up in the front of the store, and one in the rear. Fourteen feet and 12 stools from the store’s lunch counter have been discarded to provide room for the changes, The soda fountain will be one of the few fixtures which will remain in the store and one of the few areas that will keep a cash register in operation.

The renovations which began last week are expected to take six weeks to complete. The store will continue to do business during the repairs. Portable check out units are expected to be installed next week.
