I am still buzzing over last week’s classic. What an environment, kids. So many of you have accused me of jumping on the wagon, but I have been rowing the boat since day one. My family and I have deep roots with the great state of Minnesota. I spent my first five years in the land of 10,000 lakes. Moms was raised in Pipestone, my birthplace, and Pops grew up in the Twin Cities. We have still tons of relations who reside. Grandma Dar is now 93 and she roots for her beloved Vikings and Twins. She also follows the University of Minnesota Football Team on Instagram.
We aren’t the only locals who now cheer for the Maroon and Gold. Former Williamsport standout Treyson Potts is on the roster and he has quite the following in the 570. Treyson is a great kid, and I’m glad to see he has found a new home. He is doing some solid things for the number 8 team in the country. Yes. The Gophers beat Penn State 31-26 last weekend. Minnesota is now 9-0 and on top of the West of the Big 10 Conference.
The 5’11”, 200 lb. freshman tailback has played in two games this season. Treyson ran for 42 yards on four carries and a touchdown against Maryland. The jury is still out on whether Minnesota will redshirt the former Millionaire All-Stater.
Under the new rules, a player may participate in up to four games without losing a year of eligibility. Treyson did not play against the Nittany Lions Saturday, but he was on the field celebrating with the U of M’s signature win. I saw him on TV, and his proud parents were in the stands.
Treyson was amazing in 2016. He was named an All-State running back after his outstanding sophomore year. Potts ran for an incredible 2,016 yards that season. He averaged more than 10 yards per carry during his campaign. My good friend Paul McGinn and I got to see firsthand what Treyson brought to the table. We broadcasted every game on Webb Weekly Live. He had blazing speed, and could run with elusive power and grace. We often compared him to Bo Jackson on Nintendo Tecmo Bowl. You couldn’t stop him. He was legit.
Treyson then hurt his knee the following summer. He was forced to sit out all but one game his junior season. Treyson stayed positive and rehabbed that knee. He tweaked it again in 2018. Treyson only played in five games as a senior, but still rushed for 574 yards. He continued to work hard, hoping to land a major Division 1 Football Scholarship. The future was unknown.
Coach PJ Fleck and the Golden Gophers offered. Treyson finished high school early, and enrolled at the University of Minnesota in January. Brrr. Don’t go outside Grandma. He got to participate in all of the spring practices. Treyson turned some heads and was in the mix at an all-purpose position. Coach Fleck is incredible, and he is changing the entire culture. There’s a major buzz in the Twin Cities. A tremendous student, Treyson scored a 4.0 in his first semester. This youngster has a bright future.
Treyson Potts from Williamsport is now rowing the boat. He overcame a serious knee injury and deserves some major love. I reached out to my old friend from the East End on Tuesday. I wanted to congratulate him on the victory, and hopefully ask him a few questions. Treyson replied with a sincere text. He also mentioned that he had to contact the Minnesota Football department for approval of an interview. I told him no worries, and said that I’d still take great care of him. Go Gophers. Cheers.
