Whenever I am feeling blue, I stop by Wegmans to say hello to my crew. I am counting down the days until I can join them full time. My older retired friends come in all shapes and sizes. They are good for my morale as they are all fans of this column. We talk fishing and local politics. Several have recently asked my take on two major projects. My morning coffee chums still think I am in the know.
No. The County is not selling White Deer Golf Course. They are only looking to develop some areas around its perimeter. Whitey Deere continues to be a highly debated topic. Most of the folks at Wegmans don’t like the idea of using taxpayer monies to keep it going. 300 homes? Are they closing the Challenge? Why don’t they just sell? Yes. I’ve entertained them all. Props to the Commissioners to look for ways to help. They recently explained with an email to us fans of the program.
“We would like to take this opportunity to clarify information about potentially selling land for development around White Deer Golf Course. The land being considered is located adjacent to the existing 36 holes of golf. Not impacting either 18- hole layout.”
“The area for consideration is the current Par 3 golf course. This area has close access to Route 15 and the Clubhouse. Other areas being considered are along the entrance road to the Four Seasons Building, and along holes 4, 13, 14 and 15, which would have access from Blind Road. All current holes on both courses would stay fully intact.”
“Currently, we are in the discovery phase for potential development and researching opportunities for this adjacent land’s potential housing. The long term goal would be to add new housing for our community, which will also benefit the financial position of the golf course in Lycoming County. In addition, this does not change the current membership and golf opportunities, only adds to more potential improvements in the future.”
“We express our thanks to many loyal supporters of White Deer Golf Course. We look forward to providing two great golf courses for our community, the membership and the numerous charities, local businesses and associations that our golf supports for many years to come. Sincerely. The Commissioners.”
I apologize for typing every word, but I didn’t want my friends from the County to get mad at me. I got in trouble for my comments before. “This is the year this takes off” and “Membership are coming in at a record pace” were totally taken out of context. “Rounds have doubled” and “This was the first winter where Casper didn’t need any money” were a few others. My bad.
I am all for selling some land to help with the annual costs. But this is something that won’t happen overnight kids. The County will need to take a good look at the deed to see if this is even possible. I’m sure that many investors and developers will be interested. I just hope the County will be transparent in the selection process. Who knows what will transpire, but I am hoping Billy Casper will honor my existing Par 3 punch card.
In another sporting matter, sources tell me something big is about to go down. Some major players have purchased 26 acres in the west end of town. They plan on building six ball fields near the old Susquehanna Supply. The new complex will host several travel ball tournaments over the summer months. It will also be the new home for Penn College, Lycoming and Williamsport High. They are hoping to break ground this spring. Completion is slated for 2021. That’s a beautiful thing. More information coming soon. Cheers.
