Life isn’t always easy, but generally, we do our best to make it the best we can. Some of us are better at this than others. Webb Weekly writer Gerry Ayers is better at finding the best in life than most people I know. In case you haven’t heard, Gerry has stage four colon cancer and is, unfortunately, nearing the end of his journey. He has been told he has four to six months to live. But in true Gerry fashion, he isn’t looking for people to oh-poor-Gerry him. He’s out there sharing his story and hoping that his final journey will help others to become more comfortable talking about life’s inevitable end.
WNEP is chronicling Gerry’s final months. They are doing a weekly series as Gerry spends his final months doing everything he can to make the best life he can in the time he has remaining. While these pieces aren’t easy to watch, I really encourage everyone to watch them and follow along.
I also ask that all of you, please keep sending him cards, and letter, and notes, and well-wishes. You can send them right to the office, and we will make sure that he gets them. I know how much he loves and appreciates hearing from everyone in the Webb Weekly community.
Gerry has been part of the Webb Weekly family for ten years give or take and has made me laugh more than just about any other writer we’ve had over the years. He has an uncanny ability to find the best in every aspect of life. It’s a skill that would do a lot of us a lot of good.
So as we move into the holiday season, I ask you to keep Gerry in your thoughts, prayers, good vibes, whatever you prefer and yes, your cards and letters. I know that he will appreciate it.
The series on WNEP airs Thursday nights during the 7:00 p.m. broadcast. Please check it out and help share Gerry’s Journey.
Now, I know Gerry won’t tolerate me being sad and sappy for long, so let’s move on to the good, shall we?
It’s almost Thanksgiving! Next week’s issue will bring you our annual Holiday Gift Guide just in time for Black Friday! We will have plenty of Black Friday sales and deals so be sure to check that out! Our annual Blaise Alexander Christmas Coloring Contest also kicks off next week. I’ll have more details for you then, but we have a lot of great prizes up for grabs, and Jimmy’s shipping in a brand new batch of elves for judging, so get the crayons, pencils, paint, and glitter ready!
Since we are a week or so out from Thanksgiving, I know a lot of you are claiming your points for grocery store turkeys. If you can, please consider donating that turkey. The American Rescue Workers is in need of extra turkeys meals this year. The Rescue Workers will serve hundreds this Thanksgiving. You can drop your turkeys off at 643 Elmira Street, Williamsport.
