I had every intention of writing a great piece, but then I ran into a few distractions. I did the best I could to find something fast, but nothing came to mind. Politics man.
I am extremely thankful that the midterm elections are over. And perhaps life will even get back to normal. I have nothing against the political scene, but I was getting awfully tired of the online rants and bogus advertisements on TV. Billboards, radio — everywhere. Thousands of foolish promises with cheesy slogans. Then there are the candidates who weren’t from our area. Don’t get me started. Talking trash, throwing low blows and pointing fingers. Hey buddy. You lost. Kindly take down those 1,000 yard signs by the end of November.
So I usually refrain from posting anything political. I have many different friends with very different opinions. I have learned that no one will ever agree or act civil. This especially seems to happen when it’s on my page. Facebook Jail and Unfriend Me Buttons. How did I get 750 comments on my thread?
Seriously though. What a long and painful week. One poor gal even called me on the phone. She was campaigning for an unknown. We had a great talk, and she was quite candid. I told her I’d support the cause, but unfortunately, I could not vote for her boss. She was confused. I do not reside in your district lady. Haven’t heard from her since.
I must admit that I was very impressed by the turnout. Many local precincts had record numbers with this non-presidential election. I had to stand in line for a good ten minutes, and the Hepburn Township Volunteer Fire Co. ran out of stickers by 5:00 p.m.
We don’t have much say in the 17728, and many of us actually prefer it that way. Thankfully, we did not have to answer any of those tricky questions. I felt bad for you folks in Williamsport Tuesday. Home Rule Charter? City Council Kohl’s Manager? I did some research on each proposal, and it only led to more of my confusion. Good thing the majority voted NO. Why change the entire system if you only have a bad wheel?
We did see a major shift on the national level. The Democrats rallied and regained control of the House. Meanwhile, Florida is still counting their ballots. Many others lined up in massive numbers. It was a major voter turnout. I have since learned that many women and minorities were chosen. That’s a beautiful thing. President Trump got mad, blamed the media, and fired his Attorney General the next day. You can’t make this up.
I have often considered throwing my hat into the ring. I guess I’m just waiting for that perfect opportunity. My family no longer wants to shop at Wegmans after church on Sundays. A five-minute stop usually turns into a two-hour campaign. What can I say? I like people. Kissing hands and shaking babies. I even applied to serve with several organizations and authorities. You’d think someone would update the list. That advisory board no longer exists. Exhibit A.
Many county officials were not on the ballot this fall, but a lot is going on. Our Commissioners are facing a major deficit, and are looking for ways to pay for $7 million in new walkie-talkies without raising taxes. Other topics of concern is a building for the coroner, health care, leachates, and White Deer Golf Course. This is the final year of the contract with Billy Casper. Rick, Jack, and Tony have said the county will no longer support the course financially, and that a contingency plan is in place. That’s interesting.
OK, so no more politics, and I will get back to sports next week. I promise. Thanks for reading my concerns and only time will tell. But until then I will do my best to MAKE LYCOMING COUNTY GREAT AGAIN. Now that sounds catchy. Cheers.
