The Thomas T. Taber Museum of the Lycoming County Historical Society will host a Society Program on Sunday, August 19, at 1:40 p.m. in its Community Room. The program will feature the River Valley Quintet in a medley of music including well-known tunes by Irving Berlin, John Philip Sousa, Scott Joplin, and George M. Cohan.

The River Valley Quintet is composed of soprano Ruth Blankenship, alto Lucie Knauer, alto and pianist Judy Blee, tenor Joe Keller and baritone Matt Poremsky.

Many of the tunes are very recognizable and audience participation will be encouraged. Words to the songs will be available. The Quintet will display a number of period books and sheet music. They will begin the program at 1:40 with a prelude and end the program with a postlude, both piano pieces. An ice cream social will follow the program.

The Society Program continues a series of lectures, which focus on the era of World War I. As the Society Program coincides with the third Sunday of the month, admission to the museum is free. The museum is open on Sundays from May through the end of October. The Lecture Series combines the Sunday afternoon programs with Thursday morning Coffee Hours (which do not meet during the summer months). Future talks will feature an appearance by Abigail Geisinger speaking on Geisinger Hospital’s use as a World War I hospital, a talk on the Titanic, which sunk in 1912, and a lecture on aviation during World War I by William E. Fischer, Jr., U.S. Air Force (retired).

Located at 858 West Fourth Street, Williamsport, the Thomas T. Taber Museum of the Lycoming County Historical Society provides a history of the region with information about Native American culture, frontier exploration, the development of the Pennsylvania canal, immigration during the 19th century, and the logging and lumbering era of the nineteenth century. As well, the Taber Museum houses the world-class Larue Shempp Model Train Collection.
