Spring Wardrobe Swaps

Though it may not seem like it, spring has officially sprung, and soon it’ll be time to switch out your cold weather gear for warm weather apparel. The change of seasons is also the perfect time to freshen up your style. You don’t have to totally reinvent your style wheel with each season, instead try these simple swaps to easily update your everyday outfits as winter slowly turns to spring.

Swap your standard go-to pattern for polka dots. Whether you favor stripes, checks, paisleys, or plaid — store those winter prints for next year and lean into anything and everything polka-dotted. It may seem like bright spots are more for younger people, I know my toddler was very excited about her purple polka dot leggings the other day, but really, this is an ageless print. A black and white dotted blouse can be very chic for work, or a night on the town, no matter your age. Or, you can have fun with colorful dots in your accessories, like a red and white spotted umbrella, or a green and blue dotted scarf. This is also a unisex print, so why not pick up some polka-dotted socks or a tie for the fellow in your life?

Swap wrap-dresses for simple shifts. Spring and summer are all about ease and flow, so lay off waist-cinching silhouettes and slip into a boho floaty frock or t-shirt dresses for the warmer days ahead. The great thing about shift dresses is that, more and more, they are coming with pockets! Plus, shifts are throw-on-and-go pieces without zippers, snaps, or hooks to contend with when you’re ready to get going and get on with your day.

Swap out skirts for shorts. It may seem like a no-brainer to opt for shorts in the spring and the summer for your casual wear, and you’re right, it is! However, most of us tend to go with shorts in place of pants or jeans. Why not try a walking or Bermuda style short when you’d usually don a skirt? A dressier short in somewhat formal settings, like the office or a church service (depending on the atmosphere), is a great alternative for the spring and summer months. I’m also a big fan of the cocktail short for nights on the town, or even the occasional wedding.

Swap chunky sweaters for windbreakers. I don’t know about you, but when I hear the term “windbreaker”, I immediately think of an oversized 80’s neon nightmare. However, the modern take on this lightweight topper is much more utilitarian in style than its predecessor. Which isn’t to say it can’t be stylish. In fact, jackets in technical fabrics are not only a functional option for the transitional weather ahead but can be low-key chic in neutral colors like olive and khaki.

Swap standard shoulder bags for totes. Whether you prefer, straw, canvas, or waterproof, tote bags are not only a fun changeup for the warmer months; they can also be workhorse accessories. My personal preference is canvas tote bags with leather straps in a neutral tone that can go from work to the weekend. Switching out bags every few months (no matter the style) is also a good practice for regularly cleaning out your purse. I’m also a big fan of monogrammed totes as gifts — hello Mother’s Day!

Even though we’ve been waking up to freezing mornings as of late, spring weather is right around the corner and now is the time to prep your wardrobe for the new season!
