Spring Into Color

Trends come and go; hence, they should be approached with caution. However, if a particular trend comes around, that falls into your wheelhouse, by all means, embrace it. For the most part, I tend to give only passing attention to trends, and rarely incorporate them into my outfit rotation, except when it comes to spring colors.

After a winter of black coats, oversized snow boots, and gray sweaters, spring colors can rejuvenate not only your wardrobe but also your outlook.

This year’s crop of springtime hues has got me extra excited. Not only are there the standard pastels on offer, but some unexpected rich tones. Here are my top five color picks for spring!

First up, purple! From lovely lavenders to bold fuchsias, all things purple are right on trend this spring, and beyond, with ultra-violet being named the 2018 Pantone Color of the Year. You’ll see lots of options in clothing and accessories in stores. What I like most about this color family is that there is a shade of purple that is flattering for everyone! While the softer, lighter shades like amethyst and periwinkle are ideal for spring, as the year progresses, so can your color story. A bright and bold orchid is great for summer, and in the fall, you can go with deeper and darker tones like eggplant and magenta. Or, you can just pick your favorite version of purple and wear it all year long — you can’t really go wrong.

For those of you who prefer a vintage twist to your trends, check out Pale Green. This retro shade has been revived for spring, with many brands offering modern silhouettes in this mid-century hue. A mint shift is a fresh option for the upcoming wedding season, while pistachio “flavored” loungewear can brighten up your around-the-house wardrobe. Be careful, a bit of mint goes a long way. The expiration date on this trend is set for the end of summer, so unless this shade really speaks to you, don’t blow your warm-weather clothing budget on everything light green.

Another easy-to-pull-off pastel is Sky-Blue. It’s such a classic and universal color that it’s almost a neutral, and it’s flattering for everyone. Plus, it’s super easy to incorporate this shade into your wardrobe. One easy trick is to substitute a baby blue option for your whites. Swap that white button-down with an oxford-blue shirt to brighten up your office wear, or give your white t-shirts a break with some heather-blue v-necks. This is another great shade to see you into summer and beyond.

If you’re not a fan of pastels, no worries. Another on-trend color for the season is Cherry Red. This energetic tone is not for the faint of heart. Like pale green above, a little goes a long way. You don’t want to wear head-to-toe red, but instead, utilize accessories in this bold hue to update your springtime look. You can also integrate this trend into your daily style by playing around with lipstick and nail polishes in ruby, crimson, and berry.

Besides the soft and bright colors, every season has its own trendy take on neutral tones. This year, Chocolate Brown is taking center stage, which makes sense when you think about all of that Easter candy being shared. A milky caramel can be worn all on its own or paired with one of the colors above for a dynamic springtime ensemble.

Lastly, keep in mind that with these color trends, all of them are basically unisex. While I highlighted options for the ladies, you gentleman can also take advantage and pick up some dress shirts in any, or all, of these on-trend colors to brighten-up and refresh your springtime style!
