Attendance of a meeting of the membership committee of the Chamber of Commerce is one of the best ways of seeing the rapid strides the local organization is making. At the meeting yesterday, 15 substantial businessmen of the community spent two hours of their time in the middle of the day discussing ways and means for making the Chamber more active than ever in the service of Williamsport.

One of the strongest testimonials to the force in the community the Chamber has come is the interest and enthusiasm of the membership committee under the leadership of Harry Stern. Thus far in the drive, upwards of 50 new members have been obtained and with each new member the influence of the body is strengthened.

This period in the history of Williamsport is seen to be of change vital as when the city was transformed from a lumbering center to a manufacturing town. It is the purpose of the Chamber to point out the natural advantages Williamsport offers to industry, small as well as large with the idea of making for the community the widest possible industrial base. The crippling effect of the removal of Lycoming Rubber Company with its more than 2,000 employees, graphically illustrates the danger of concentration in one industry, and with the danger clearly in mind, the Chamber is seeking to make the industrial life of Williamsport as diversified as possible.

The success of the membership drive has already been secured, but it will continue until a full canvass of the city is made. Meanwhile other committees are meeting almost daily and contributing their share to the work that is animating the Chamber of Commerce.
