We all know the arrival of a new season is a signal to rework your wardrobe to reflect the changing weather outside. With the onset of warmer spring days, it’s only natural to shift to lightweight jackets and sweaters, and the same is true for your skincare routine. Those rich, heavy creams and face oils that satiated your dry skin in January aren’t as useful come May. Now is the time to transition your skin care routine for spring.
First up, it’s time to start exfoliating head to toe. Regardless of the time of year, exfoliation is an important step in your routine; however, spring is the ideal time to amp things up, especially if you haven’t been exfoliating over the winter, afraid to irritate drier skin. So now is the time to slough off the layers of winter by increasing exfoliation to two or three times a week depending on your skin sensitivity. This will also help prep for glowing summer skin. I tend to keep it simple for exfoliation. For the face, good old St. Ives Hypoallergenic Scrub, and for the body, Native Coconut & Vanilla Scrub.
After exfoliation, if time allows, plop on a moisturizing sheet mask for 10 minutes or so. In general, during spring, you should swap out your thicker, heavy moisturizer for a lightweight option. CeraVe’s Ultra-Light Moisturizing Gel is paraben-free and contains niacinamide for sensitive skin. Or check out Byoma’s Hydrating Milky Moisturizer that purports to strengthen the skin barrier, which could have been damaged over the dry winter months. Similarly, switching to a lighter cleanser can be beneficial, especially for oilier skin types. The rise in temperature and humidity may cause your skin to produce more natural oils, which we know leads to clogged pores. If this has been a concern in the past, you may want to invest in a targeted product like La Roche-Posay’s Effaclar Wash for Oily Skin, which boasts zinc pidolate to effectively cleanse away dirt and oil while maintaining your skin’s pH balance. If oily skin is less of a concern, then there’s Mad Hippie’s Cream Cleanser available at Ulta that also supports your pH balance with jojoba, green tea, and macadamia oil extracts.
Next up, if you haven’t already, it’s time to swap out your face oils from winter with a hydrating serum. Serums are a great warm-weather addition to your skincare lineup and can address specific issues like wrinkles, discoloration, and dullness. In fact, layering serums with different key ingredients will boost water levels in the skin and increase radiance while addressing multiple concerns. I use a base serum of CORSX Snail Mucin Repairing Serum for its anti-aging properties, and I’m also looking to Cetaphil’s Advance Defense Serum for its antioxidant properties to strengthen my skin against daily stressors. We live in stressful times, but I don’t want that reflected in my face.
This next one is a big must-have for me. Sunscreen is an all-year-long kind of product in our household, and as you begin to venture outside more often, it’s important to use the right products. An SPF 30 is the minimum level you’ll need for adequate protection, and it should be reapplied every few hours when in direct exposure to sunlight. If you’re looking for a BOGO product, then look at Clinique’s UV Solutions Hydrating Sunscreen SPF 50. I also recommend looking for those lightweight moisturizers that include SPF and/or cosmetics that feature SPF protection. Thrive Causemetics’ Filtered Effects Protecting Primer SPF 37 will nourish and protect your skin, while also serving as a prepping agent for foundation. I use Meilury’s Sunscreen Setting Powder SPF 35, which is great for reapplying throughout the day and combats shine from oil and sweat.
Luckily, seasonally adjusting the lineup of your daily beauty routine takes a lot less time and effort than overhauling your winter wardrobe. Plus, a regimen change will benefit the overall health of your skin as well as address any particular concerns. This rundown of skincare updates may sound familiar to long-term readers, as I did a similar write-up last April, but this will stand as a reminder for last year’s tips with some new options thrown in.
