December 25, 336 AD, the first Christmas celebration history books say
And every year since it’s been a big day
Since 2003 Webb Weekly has been coming your way
And the writings of this column are about the sports people play
As we take pause during this special time of the year
There’s so much around us for which we can cheer
It matters little which town or which team
Sports are an entity about which we can dream
So, take a moment to sit back and reflect
On your own sports memories and what they have meant
You may not recall who wore the homecoming crown
But you surely remember when that rival went down
When reunions are held and folks come through the door
The first things recalled are the games and the score
The branches of sport grow from every family tree
As each new generation adds excitement to see
It could be little Susie kicking the ball in the goal
Or brother Bobby pitching out of a 3-0 hole
Then watching that three-pointer swish through the net
And the tennis match won in three straight sets
The perspective may differ through the eyes of the viewer
The phrase ‘bloods thicker than water’ may always be truer
Parents root for their offspring and see every move
And sometimes get angry when others disapprove
Grandparents are the loyalist fans of them all
They travel great distances to see them play ball
It doesn’t matter the time or the place
They watch the games with a smile on their face
In each of our households this time of the year
There are many traditions for which we hold dear
That special ornament or stocking red cap
The childhood photo sitting on Santa’s lap
Through all the many things that you must do
I greatly appreciate you giving this space a view
And hope you enjoy the tales that were told
Talking with readers never gets old
“Twas the night before Christmas,” Clement Moore did write
Now just a few more hours till Santa takes flight
I, like the rest of the Webb Weekly crew
Send Merry Christmas wishes to each one of you
We’ll be back in two weeks to begin another year anew
With lots of stories and features for you to view
Sports will remain the focus of words that I write
But this Christmas Eve, may you enjoy a good night!
Merry Christmas with appreciation and best wishes!
