One of the things I enjoy most about doing the Webb Weekly is getting to talk to so many people. Believe me; my job never gets boring because I get this opportunity with folks about so many different topics. This includes the obvious, like working with those at businesses, discussing columns within the paper, talking about the difficult issues facing our Country, and in general, just having conversations about whatever anyone would like to discuss. Those who read my column regularly know the importance I place upon in-person conversation. That people from every walk of life, no matter their beliefs, must get their heads up out of whatever electronic device they choose and communicate directly with fellow human beings. There is nothing that can replace direct conversation, as in actually seeing and talking with another person.

So please, take the time to communicate directly with your fellow man, whether it is with your family, at work, within an organization you participate in, or just saying hello to someone in passing. If you know and are close with a person who doesn’t seem to be having a good day, don’t be afraid to engage them with the — is everything OK? Respect their privacy but also open the door for a direct conversation. And please, no matter who you’re talking with, remember the Golden Rule, and believe me, I know how difficult this is when the other person may not.

Now, getting back to where I began my column. It is always great getting to talk to folks through the contests and giveaways that appear within our pages each year. Editor Steph and my staff do a great job on the work behind the scenes. I just get to have fun and conversate with folks. Whether it’s Big Bucks, the kids’ Christmas Coloring Contest, Halloween or Easter events, Home Show and Grill Giveaway, or any of the contests we have, thank you to everyone for entering. I am always amazed by the number of people that make the time to bring an entry form or coloring contest into the office.

Like so many things in life, sometimes the stars just align for the winner. This was the case in this year’s Great American Cookout Giveaway. A Webb Weekly tip of the cap with the American Flag on the side to Carl Betts for being this year’s winner!!

On a beautiful sun-drenched day, Alys Mingle and I delivered a 5-burner grill and gas courtesy of the great people at Elery Nau Hardware and gift certificates from Rupert’s Specialty Meats and Frosty Beverage to Carl and his wife, Barb. Thanks to Mikey Rupert and old Chet Ruth for always being part of our contest and providing great food and that cold beverage to wash it down. In talking with the couple, we learned that on the day they were called about winning the contest, they were actually going to be heading out to look for a new grill, as theirs had cooked its last burger. The Betts were hoping to find it and have it assembled in time for the 4th of July.

So, it was our pleasure to deliver the Great American Cookout Giveaway to these wonderful folks. They were truly two of the nicest people I have ever met that love our Great Nation, each other, and the place they call home. They even invited us back for a cold beer and hamburger.

And yes, we had the grill to them for the 4th of July weekend.

The Betts’ smiles, laughs, and appreciation made me think it must be time to do another contest.
